Has the United States Lost Its Soul?

Interesting opinion piece I found today:

And I ask myself today, what does the United States gain if it inherits the whole world but loses its soul? The soul that made this country a unique experiment -- a beacon for the whole world to envy. Today, the United States my ancestors and I knew as a child no longer exists.

they quote words I saw written on top of the altar of a Catholic church I used to attend as a child: "What does a man gain if he inherits the whole world but loses his immoral soul."

Shouldn't that be "immortal"? :jet:

I don't think the everyday people have lost their soul....too many of us are trying to figure out how to make ends meet and survive.
It is the so called "upper crust" who have lost their soul and are trying to drag us to the bottom with them.
The only time when we seem to have lost our "soul" is when we try to emulate them.

I dont think we have lost our soul as much as we have lost our courage.

Political correctness has cut deeply into the Psyche of America.

Doing away with the draft has hurt America badly also. Too many kids today dont know that they owe much to this country, Too many believe in entitlements. They believe that because they live in a relatively free country ,that freedom came cheap ,and will remain cheap. In fact it was bought with the lives of great Americans, and will be lost when Americans no longer are willing to pay the price.

NOT Politically Correct!!
And many Americans demand that any war fought should not last longer than a game of DOOM or the troops must be pull out...:coffee:

You have made a major point..that too few Americans are willing to pay the price for freedom, and are content that others do so. As a draftee in'70, I was not happy, but I had it instilled in me that this was one of the costs for the freedoms we take for granted.
Years later, when I worked for a major book store, I had this argument with some of the younger ones. I told them that rights are earned and not inherited. You would have thought I had made a major faux paus....I got castigated with replies like"what do you mean earn?" Well...what more can I say?
I think you appreciate things more when you earn them.

I have to agree, not so much on the draft aspect, but courage is definitely lacking and political correctness had gone beyond the absurd.

The leadership in this country lacks the courage to wage war properly. War needs to be brutal and nasty. You can't win a war when you have your soldiers going to jail for putting panties on the heads of prisoners. You can't secure our borders if your worried about who it's going to piss off. Quite frankly, I don't really care that the Mexicans are crossing over in droves. I'm more concerned with who else is coming in unnoticed because our leadership refuses to act.

I could go on for days....
