Hate Crimes Bill

FYI...
There is a “hate crimes” bill that has already passed the U.S. Senate. The House will soon vote on the bill. If the bill passes, the ultimate result could be that it is a federal crime to publicly criticize the homosexual lifestyle. It is urgent that you contact your Representative today to oppose this dangerous “hate crimes” amendment that could lay the groundwork for persecution of Christians.
Can’t happen, you say. In Canada, one cannot publicly criticize homosexuality. Because of a “hate crimes” law that includes sexual orientation, even the quoting of Scriptures that condemn homosexuality can be illegal.

Because of “hate crimes” legislation in Sweden a pastor was sentenced to 30 days in jail for preaching a sermon in which he said homosexuality is wrong. To contact your Representative through the capitol switchboard, dial 202-224-3121.
Please read this excellent article about this issue from Robert Knight of The Culture and Family Institute.

I somewhat agree... I say a crime is a crime, but when did thinking or speaking out on an issue become a crime. In my opinion the same people who are pushing this legislation are the same ones who are normally fighting for 'free speech'. They are also the same people we will most likely see exercising their freedom of free speech.

if the preacher is not inciting violence against homosexuals, i'd say he/she should be able to speak his/her thoughts. but, i'm not opposed enough to support your cause... good luck!

Well finally!

So much for that freedom of speech and religion nonsense, Good riddance, and it's about damn time. Half the problems in this country come from people exercising their right to free speech and religion.

As long as those ACLU baffoons don't come along and ruin it for us.

If this "hate crimes bill" was added as an amendment to the Defense Appropriations Act is it now going to be law since Defense is the only appropriations bill to have been passed and made public law to date?

They won't. It's a liberal cause. But watch them come out of the woodwork when I turn my BIL in for making anti-hetero remarks.

I don't want to see any law passed that makes critical speech a crime. What the heck are these people thinking! Talk about slippery slopes.

I think hate-speech laws of any kind raise some serious First Amendment questions. Wouldn't stuff like cross-burnings on people's lawns be covered under harrassment laws? I've written before that I believe Falwell and Robertson's post-9/11 comments were hateful and morally reprehensible, but I can't see making statements like that illegal. Just as they have the right to spew that garbage, I have the right to label them as the hatemongers they are.

How about "burning the flag", which has been protected by the courts, will that now be a crime?

I would consider murder too.

It's a total lack of respect for the country that has to put up with their :bs:

People who burn the flag in protest are being idiotic and provocative. They just want to get people riled up. It's a pathetic, desperate plea for attention. Reminds me of PETA protesters.

Still, I agree that flag-burning as protest should remain legal. As you probably know, flag etiquette calls for damaged flags to be burned in a dignified manner. I've heard of local Legion halls doing this. I could easily imagine police arresting someone by mistake at one of those ceremonies.

I have to agree with you and JH; and include denying the greatest symbol of your country as well.

If that is the way they feel about "Old Glory", let them move to another country.

They don't have any business being in ours.
