Head injury question

My son fell tonight and gashed his forehead about 40 minutes ago. It took about 5-10 minutes to get the bleeding to stop and at first I thought he had blood coming out of his nose, but he cut it underneath.

He is seems fine, talking, and everything on this check list I have makes me think he is fine. But he is tired and I thought that if a child hits their head you shouldn’t let them go to sleep for a while, but I do not remember how long and I haven’t been able to find the information.

Anybody?

When my son fell (when he was younger) and hit his head, his dr. told me to check on him every hour, try to wake him, make sure he was responsive and acting normally.

Call the emergency care unit and ask them.

I called the doctor's office emergency hotline and I'm waiting for a call back.

Catt,

I already read that - it doesn't say how long to keep them awake.

It is his bedtime so being tired would be normal, just thought I heard you shouldn't go to sleep within such and such amount of time after a head injury.

That's mostly with babies. Let him sleep but watch him ALL night and keep trying to get in touch with his dr. or whoever is on call. How did he do it? What did he hit?

The boys were running around playing outside throwing snow at each other and he slipped and hit his forehead on the concrete around the pool. It is a small gash and it poured blood for a few minutes. I had just said "stay away from the pool."

Anyway the doctor just called and said an hour was long enough to keep him awake and to check on him for the next few hours.

Head injuries bleed horribly, even if it's a small cut.

I'd still watch him like a hawk.

Good luck.

I thought for sure when I saw aaaaaalllllllll the blood we were going to the ER for stitches but once I got it to stop bleeding, I saw that it was just a small gash. It did bleed horribly and he is going to have a goose egg. :ohwell:

He is right here sleeping next to me now.

Morning, I hope he's okay. I guess they have the klutz gene, huh? :huggy: Sorry, I HAD to say that...
My youngest decided to be a super hero and jumped off the coffee table. Gashed his forehead so I could see the bone because there's not much meat there. They butterflied the small cut and said to watch him for 24 hours. The boy still ain't right to this day. :lmao: :flowers: :flowers:

Other than looking like he was in a fight, he is doing fine. I can see that it did bleed a little over night from the looks of the Band-Aid.

Glad to hear he's ok. Cat is correct, cuts (especially on the forehead) tend to be superficial cuts and bleed profusely. I used to work as a med tech and folks would coming rushing in all the time because of a cut on the forehead that just bled and bled and bled.... its just kind of what they do  Does he have a headache or anything today?

No nothing like that. He just looks beat up.
:huggy:

The face and head area is very vascular and dosen't have alot of depth so little cuts do look awful when injury does occur. I'm glad it looked worst then it was:yay:
