Headaches

Just wanted to ask a question, my youngest boy that is 7yo had a really bad headache last night, so bad that he went into sweats, turned really pale and after about 20mins he finally :barf:. He ran no fever and after a couple of hrs his head started hurting again and did the samething. I would have taken him to the ER, but didn't want to put him through it. Waiting for the drs. office to open to schedule appt., but for now wanted to ask if others have gone through this with any of their children. He complains quite often of headaches, but nothing like what happened last night. I didn't sleep a wink last night. Slept on floor right next to his bed to make sure nothing else happened. Crazy, yes I know, but my bedroom is on a different level from his.

When he woke up this morning he shook his head and said, "Mommy my head doesn't hurt any more!"

My daughter who is 10 has gotten headaches for a few years, it took us some time but we figured out what foods and drinks cause them. She's gotten to the point where she knows exactly what she can and can't eat. She hasn't complained of a headache in quite some time. She will not eat chocolate and stays away from anything with red dye, there are some others she knows not to eat also.

Glad your little one is feeling better today. You should still get him in to see the doctor as soon as you can.

I avoid anything that contains red dye. He does have allergies and we do avoid those foods. He just looked so terrible last night and boy did it scare me. I was wiping the sweat off his little forehead and the top of his lip beaded up with sweat. Kids are great, but goodness they sure can scare the shiot out of you....

With the way he was sweating he should see the doctor, just to rule anything else out.

I used to get migranes so bad I would hyperventilate. Haven't had those since my ex and I split up 12 years ago, what an amazing cure.

That sounds like a migraine. both my kids have had migraines since they were little. Girl now 12 had her first when she was 2 and boy 7 had his first at 3. Usually in kids when they get a migraine their stomach hurts or they will tell you they feel like throwing up. I would get it shown to the doctor. i'd keep a diary of thier activities as well. My kids get a migraine if they don't get their 8 hour sleep.

My daughter would get them if she didn't get enough sleep, if she skipped a meal. I know she would get so bad that she would throw up and that usually made her feel better. Migranes are the worst especially for kids.

He is in bed by 9pm every night, he can't make it much past that. He normally wakes up between 7am & 8am. As far as eating, the kid can eat. He has breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner and then a snack before he goes to bed. I also monitor his sugar intake also, plenty of water and know soda's. If he drinks a soda, he normally drinks diet Coke.

Just called doc and we have appt. @ 3pm.

I am so very blessed
I picked my 2 1/2 year old up early from daycare yesterday because he was in the baby room laying on the floor, wimpering from a headache. It was so sad.

I brought him home, snuggled in bed with him, gave him some Claritin for Kids, and let him watch a movie and sleep it off. At about 8:30, he was fine.

Hope your feels better soon.

Thanks to everyone, I will let you know what I find out. If he didn't have them often I wouldn't be as concerned. Not that I wasn't concerned the other times he had them, but last night put the icing on the cake for me.

The diet coke will trigger headaches in kids. Try giving him regular soda and see if he gets a headache.

I noticed that too. I won't let my daughter drink diet sodas.

Splenda will give me an instant headache. I tried it once but thought it was coincidence, tried it again, same thing, immediate headache, so I avoid that stuff. Strange that equal doesn't do it.

hnmmm. Just keep a diary of anything and everything that he eats and all his activities that should help in finding what triggered it. Ohhh andmy son if he plays in the sun without a hat that will trigger it as well. So I have to make sure he wears a hat while he is outside even in school.

Funny that different people have different triggers. I cannot use Equal or NutraSweet at all-- instant migraine -- but I'm fine with Splenda. I also cannot have hot dogs -- too many nitrates. I think that is part of why it is so hard to initially figure out what triggers your headaches, because there are so many.

The first time as an adult that I went to the urgent care for a migraine, I told the doctor that I had always had "normal headaches", but never any like the migraine I was having right then. He then told me that headaches weren't normal. It was the first time that someone had ever told me that... I honestly didn't know because I had them so frequently. That was when I became much more proactive about treating them and figuring out how to prevent them.

Good luck!

Does he drink enough water? Dehydration also causes headaches.

Normally we go through 3 cases of water in 2 weeks, he drinks anywhere from 1 to 2 bottles a day. He doesn't do that by choice either, I make both of my boys drink water daily. I buy the Crystal Light stuff and he likes to use that from time to time.

Well the doc order blood work and head CT. Had blood work done this morning, he fast for that and the head CT will be done at 5pm today. The blood work covers just about everything from A-Z. Just have to get the CT done and then the waiting process begins....

When he woke up this morning the poor thing thought he had peed the bed, he didn't, his t-shirt and pj bottoms were wet from sweating so bad. Don't know what that was all about, he is not one to sleep with covers on.
