LEONARDTOWN, MD (June 5, 2024) – On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, the Maryland Assembly on School-Based Health Care (MASBHC) recognized St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) School-Based Health Center (SBHC) Program Manager, Amber Grabowski, with the Rising Leadership Award.

The MASBHC Rising Leadership Award is presented to a school based health center leader in the state who demonstrates outstanding commitment, passion, leadership and innovation within their role, serving students, families and the school community.

In partnership with St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS), SMCHD opened two school-based health centers in August 2022. Located on the campus of Margaret Brent Middle School and Spring Ridge Middle School, these health clinics provide primary care and urgent care services to all SMCPS students and staff during and after school hours and are also open to members of the general community after school dismissal. SMCHD is working to add behavioral health services to these sites for the coming 2024-2025 school year. Community members can easily enroll in the SBHC program to receive health care services.

“I am honored to be selected as Rising Leader by the MASBHC,” said SBHC Program Manager Amber Grabowski. “I look forward to continuing to impact the health of students in our community as well as advocating for SBHCs both in our community and at the state and national level.”

“Amber Grabowski has played a pivotal role in the development of our SBHCs,” said Dr. Meena Brewster, St. Mary’s County Health Officer. “In less than two years since opening the first SBHCs in southern Maryland, Ms. Grabowski and our SBHC team members have enrolled over 2,000 St. Mary’s County community members and provided health care to many local families.”
