Health Insurance Agent/Consultant

I searched the forum for the answer but I couldn't find anything about a local health insurance agent/consultant so please don't flame! I recently switched jobs and they don't offer health benefits for a year for me and my two year old daughter. I have been told that there are agents out there that can sign you up for insurance and get a commission off of it. I have no idea what i am doing so i definitely need advice from someone. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or, if you are a guru on the subject, do you know the best options for this situation? Thanks in advance for any help!

Be VERY careful. You would be going from a "group" insurance to a "private" insurance and the rules can be very different. It can also cause you trouble a year from now when you try to go from "private" back to "group". Ask tons of questions. Have you considered carrying your current insurance on COBRA for the 12 month period?

Thanks kwillia. I am kind of freaking about this. Does it cost money to just talk to a consultant? I am sure that they will say anything to get their commission though...
