Health Insurance

I am looking for health insurance for my mom. I have about 18 months left before her COBRA runs out. She is 58 now so she has a little while before medicare chimes in.

I called the company that she has the COBRA from and its over $900 a month (its about 150 now).

Anyone have any advise?

No matter what, private policies are pretty pricey... so don't expect a premium of 150. I pay over 700 a month.

Health insurance premiums are going to eat us all alive, if we don't die first.

I went COBRA for a year, and then went with blue cross/blue shield carefirst.

It's very expensive compared to what I had, and doesn't have nearly the benefits of an employer covered plan.

How is your mom's current health status?

Its not bad.

I wish I could put her on my insurance.

She only gets a $500 pension check a month right now but doesn't qualify for any state assistance cause my dad left her with quite a bit of life insurance and her house is paid for.

58's not old...why doesn't she work? Not implying anything, just curious. It would certainly open up her options for health insurance.

She hasn't since she was 21. She doesn't really think she can do anything in todays workplace. Working moms where I grew up were the exception rather than the rule.

:stupid: Where did she get COBRA?

She could do something and better off insurance-wise in the long run.

You can get individual insurance from Carefirst. My son did this when he left a job and went to another. He had to wait 6 months before his new insurance kicked it. You can get insurance fairly cheap but it doesn't cover much..the more coverage you want, the more expensive it gets.

58 and just entering the workforce... it would be very hard for her to land a job that offers health insurance benefits. I'm thinking not many offices are going to give a 58 year old a chance.

I'm thinking her COBRA most likely came from being on a spouse's policy and the spouse is no longer with us or in the least no longer employed.

That is correct, what she has now is excellent. Paid 100% of my dads expensive hospital bills. I told her if she is going to get something that she better get it now.

You could look into an HSA (Health Savings Plan) that would offer benefits, usually cheaper than "normal" health insurance.

Thanks

I can't believe the cost of a traditional policy. I have found what looks like a decent HMO in her area and some decent individual policies too. I dont have a price on them yet since still have over a year.

Please keep giving me suggestions if you can.

There are companies that employer's can piggy-back on to get low health insurance rates. The two names that ring a bell are CoreSource and Administaff. I don't know if they allow individual coverage, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to do some research.

Just a note of caution - there are some insurance plans that have a very low, very attractive premium, but they also have a ridiculously high deductible ~ where you seem to pay out of pocket forever.

Found some fairly reasonable plans from AARP!

Quite a load off my mind.
