Healthy Cooking for My Dogs

I have two small Yorkies. After doing a little research, have decided to feed my dogs home cooked meals. We call it doggy stew! Mostly made of chicken or beef, tofu, vegtables like peas, carrots, green beans & celery, grains, garlic, eggs, olive oil, finely ground eggs shells (for calcium & phosphorus, and occasional 1/4 tums. They love it!!! My mother did this for years for her Dobies, and they lived long healthy lives. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this? Any feedbacks? :howdy:

I was going to try feeding raw to my puppy but he just barks at it...he likes his kibble.

I don't feed raw. Can't quite do that yet. It's all cooked.
I thought that when you cook the food it cooks out all the good stuff.

What I've read, is that raw is good. But I cook like for myself. I also give my dogs treats of raw apples, banannas, carrots. Raisins, grapes, chocolate are not good.

Right, but what I'm saying is that I was under the assumption that when you cook food, a lot of nutrients are cooked out of the food, defeating the purpose of feeding "good" food.

You shouldn't be giving your dogs vegtables or grains on a regular basis at all.

I've read that if you feed all raw, vegetables are a very important part of that diet. Then again, she is cooking them, so any nutritional value would be compromised.

Not cooked any more than in canned or dry pet foods, with no addiitives such as food dyes. And are we sure that the chicken noted on the label is all chicken or just by products?

The vet just told us Carrots, and Green Beans were good for the dogs (*But that might just be pugs I don't know for sure*)

Vick, HERE IS a website that talks specifically about feeding yorkies. It also has several links that would be of interest to you. Nutritional guidance can be different for different breeds. I don't think there are many yorkie experts here so you are probably better off posting in a yorkie forum in regards to how best to feed your dog.

Crap...I'm so confused! I normally steam rice and meats and add peas and carrots. Why are veggies and grains bad for them?

It's not that they're bad for them it's that they really don't provide any nutritional benefit to them. Dogs are meat eaters and their food should consist mostly of meat. Canines in the wild only get veggitation and grain out of the stomachs of whatever it is they're eating. I'm not saying that when cooking for your dog that they should get "none" just very limited quantities.

I just had to switch Neo's food to the Nature's Recipe with Fish. But he loves him some green beans and carrots to nibble on :yay:

Well we took both in.........And the vet was a little upset that Buddy is about 6lbs too much. So he needs to lose some wait. Poor thing.

How much does she weigh? I know Neo weighs about 24 pounds and he is just a big pug. Not a small tiny thing at all.
