Heat issues

I have a '00 Caravan. I have to turn the knob to the 4th position to get the heat to come on. It's way too much. When I turn it on a lower notch, no heat comes out of the vents. Any suggestions on what could be the problem?

And no, it's not my blinker fluid.

There's your problem. :coffee:

 I had a Mazda pickup that did something very similar. A/C would only work if the fan was on low. Turn it up and the compressor stopped working. Never did figure out what was wrong with it.

I know. I hate my van but it is what I'm stuck with until next year. :ohwell:

Air in the lines or not enough coolant are the easiest ones. Check your coolant reservoir. If it is at the MAX mark, then when the engine is COLD after sitting a couple of hours without running open the radiator cap and look for liquid. If there is none visible, you need to add coolant and check for a leak. You can use plain water until you are sure it is not leaking, but you will have to replace it with coolant ASAP.

Yeah, switch like someone said. My truck doesn't work in position 1. Someday I will pull it and clean it up if I can or see what's up and fix it. Or replace it.

No air movement at all until it's in the 4th position. There are 5 positions on my heater.

Seems to me there are different fuses for low fan vs high fan on some models. Check all your fan and heater fuses. If it's not that, it could be the switch, like was mentioned.

I was just pondering that thought..

I haven't seen it in any car I've owned, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be the case in her car.

Where might one find these fuses?

Thre are usually two boxes of fuses..

On in the Engine compartment, and one under the dash. Think my Dodge (this was a LOOOONG time ago) had a fuse box underneath the steering wheel, or to the left of the steering wheel but if was there figure you would have seen it already.

Your User Manual should show where it is, and which fuse goes to what.. if not Google it..

The fuses are usually under the dash on the driver's side. If you have the owner's manual; that will tell you. Ordinarily, the fuse block is enclosed, and it may say "FUSES." Not being sarcastic; that's what it usually says.
