Hecht's in Marlow Heights Rumored to be Closing

According to a thread in DCGrocery.com, it is rumored that the old, former Hecht's (now a Macy's) in the Marlow Heights Shopping Center is slated for closing. I'll be heading there for our next get together at Steak in a Sack, December 13th, starting at 1:30, to get pictures inside and out. That store had a very distinctive design to it, and I'm sure many of you remember the sloping, "slide", that covered the outside stairs connecting the upper and lower level. I'm not sure when Hecht's opened there, perhaps the late 50's, but the early 60s for sure. It also contained a garden shop outside, "Arcadia Gardens", right next to Steak in a Sack. There was also a restaurant inside, "The Maryland Room".

I can't imagine what they would do with that building, but it would leave a huge gap between the upper and lower level. Anyway, this move isn't surprising. When the Hecht's stores were being rebranded into Macys a year or two ago, I don't think the parent company had any intentions of keeping that particular store open very long. My personal opinion is that they kept it open as a Macys, so as not to upset the local residents. When it is time to close it down, they will tell everyone, "Well, we tried".

I used to got there when I was a kid with my parents. Your right that place has been there forever.

My grandparents used to live in that area up until two years ago.

Sad. Hecht's was my first part-time and then full-time job.

I worked at Lakeforest (started at 15 years old) and saw many changes during the years. We also had a restaurant ("Edgar's")

We will still have the memories.

I miss Woodie's, too.

I used to go there with my friends in the late 80's to get concert tickets. Around the early 90's, there wasn't much in the way of stores to get me to go back.

Most of the stores had starting converting from the traditional brand stores to the more locally based start-ups.

That stinks. That store is right near my work. It is very convenient to go there at lunch time if you needed something or wanted to check out sales. The staff is always very nice.

I remember well the Hecht's Bargain Basement. I used to go there with my grandmother in the 60's (when I was much younger) and you always found great stuff there, not junk like you find in "bargain stores" nowadays. We'd go to the one at Prince Georges Plaza since it was closer to where we lived. I hear there is a mall there but haven't been there in 30 years or so.

I am old I remember the Hecht's at 7th and F. Sts.

It had the first escalator I can remember.

Always had a great train layout at Christmas.

Im old also, I remember getting on the WMA Transit buses that use to run into PG County, my brother and I were always going into downtown on these buses with our grandmother back in the 50's. There was no where else to shop in Hillcrest back in those days. At Christmas time it was always special with the window displays that Hechts, Lansburgh, Woodies and Kahns department stores would have.
Oh I have spent many a hour in the Marlow Hechts, when that shopping center opened along with Iverson Mall (which was the first enclosed shoppijng mall in the Washington area) there were some really nice stores to shop at.

Oh yeah, that was an annual trip to the big city growing up to see the displays in the windows. Probably one of my first memories of the xmas season.
