Matthew 28:1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
Timeline check.... It's the day after Sabbath. He had Passover dinner and got arrested at the Garden on Thursday. He was "questioned", sentenced and beaten all night Thursday night. Friday, He was hung on a Cross, and he was dead by 3PM. His body was left in a cave hewn out of solid rock; a seal was placed on the stone that covered the entrance. A Roman Guard was placed at the tomb so no one could steal the body. He was alone in the hollowed-out rock hole from Friday night until Sunday Morning. NOTHING happened on Saturday because it's the Sabbath, and no one works on the Sabbath except the Roman Guard, and the priests. So, Thursday... action, Friday... action, Saturday... Sabbath, Sunday morning.... "He's not here, He'll see you in Galilee".
There was another earthquake! On Friday, there was a quake about 3PM that tore the curtain in the temple from top to bottom. Now there's a earthquake that broke the Roman Seal on the rock and rolled it away. I don't have a lot of experience with earthquakes. I've only been in one and it was way down in the middle of Virginia, and I was back in Lusby. It shook but not nearly enough to roll a boulder.
I do know about boulders though. We had a couple of them behind our house in Gales Ferry, Connecticut. I know for a fact; it would indeed take a rip-roaring violent quake to move a boulder big enough to carve a cave big enough for a human to lay down in it! I'm surprised thousands didn't die.... but then again, this was a Resurrection! So, I know I will read that many were Resurrected as well. This was a big rock!
The guard at the entrance must have been horrified. It was their job to make sure no one got in or came out! They would face the death penalty! I wonder if the same guys that beat Him were assigned to watch the seal on the stone that covered His tomb. Oh, wouldn't that be a sweet revenge?!? After all, they would have been on the night shift. Being Roman they wouldn't be particularly worried about "working on the Sabbath".
The two Marys apparently went home for the Sabbath. After all, good Jewish girls belong at home at night. They shouldn't be seen hanging out near the Soldiers in a graveyard.
What would you do if you saw an Angel as white as snow.... glowing?
They saw Jesus die! They saw the guard run Jesus threw with a sword and He didn't flinch. They knew He was dead when they laid His body in the tomb. Now He's talking????!!!!!?????
The girls were there to embalm Him. He wouldn't lay down for that!
He'll see them in Galilee!
