You can go to any health department in any county in MD so long as the baby was born in MD. Oldest's was lost in one of the moves and I needed it to register him for school. I made the mistake of going all the way to Charles County where he was born only to be told I could have gotten it in St. Mary's. I think it was like $25 for an official copy and the wait was all of 5 minutes.

Actually, they don't. What you get in the mail is a Birth Registration Card. It is different from a Birth Certificate. It does tell you that there is a Certificate on file and what the file number is and for many things, it is sufficient. You can get the kids in school around here, but probably not if you move out of state. You can't get a passport or a driver's license with it.

Thanks everyone. I got it yesterday at the Calvert Health Dept. However, now we have to contact someone in Baltimore because my husband's name is incorrect on it (his name is so long that one letter is left off)
