I give up folks have lived in Calvert County for 30 years I have a problem in one flower bed with something i have never sen before not even sure it is a weed or what, luckily it is contained by concrete surroundings or i don't know what would happen. Have taken samples to Wentworths, and given samples to True green chemlawn and checked with a landscaper and their answer is i don't know what it is. Have sprayed total vegetation killer on them and weed killer and they think it is fertalizer. They look like small evergreens but there are hundreds of them. I am attaching a picture they are all around the hostas. They dpead like wildfire. Any help would be greatly appreciated on how to eradicate these.. Thanks in advance .... Jim

It reminds me of ferns, but ferns are flat, these are conical, kinda. And weed killer would destroy ferns.

They do look like mini xmas trees, i don't have them in any of the other flower beds and nowhere else on the property, have checked with all my neighbors and they don't have the problem nor have they ever seen an anything like this. I honestly think the only thing keeping them from spreading further is they are surrounded by concrete, side of the house on one side, concrete walkway on the other, concrete stairs on the 3rd side and asphalt driveway on the 4th...

PM me tomorrow, and I'll give you some info on where to take them. It's a Maryland State Office that I believe is in every County.

I think you are surrounded by Leprechaun's and Faery's.

Try searching this: Horse Tail/Mares Tail (Equisetum Arvense). I'm not sure if it's the right one or not, but some images look similar. Apparently it's very difficult to get rid of (as you have seen).

Looks like one of the weeds in my lawn today as I was applying Weed-N-Feed. I hope it dies.

It's not mare's tail. Mare's tail is TALL. Take a sample to Ben Beale at the St. Mary's Cooperative Extension office in Leonardtown, in the same building as the Health Department. He's a genius.

I showed the pictures to my coworker. She said she doesn't know the name, but has seen it growing in wooded wetlands/wet soils. Is your area very wet?

Well, it have been raining alot lately, so it would make sense to have them growing. Plus deers eat them.

Hmm. Wet soil. Could it be....? We have moss growing between our patio bricks, in the shady areas. And it is in full bloom now - meaning it's sent up the spore-dispersal structures. And that is rather dramatic-looking; like hair sticking straight up from the usual-looking moss plants. With little lumps at the ends of the hairs.

Just a thought; I can't quite tell from your photos for sure.
