First, you have to decide on the type of dog you want..age, etc. and then go meet the dogs and take the pup with you.

Animals go through mourning same as people do. He misses his buddy and knows that you are feeling pretty low as well. Like Cat said, do your research for a little while. This gives you time to heal and also allows you to prep yourself for getting another dog. In the mean time, what about taking the puppy to the dog park, doggie daycare, or something else that he enjoys? It won't replace having a live in buddy but it reminds him that he is not the only dog left in the world.

bruno went through the same issues when my mom and stepdad went on a 3 week trip. Bruno wouldn't eat for 3 days so I went and bought her wetfood and finally got her back to eating. She also wouldn't want to play or any of that she just wanted to stay inside and sleep all day long. Today she will be hopefully be happy when she sees my stepfather walk back in the door downstairs and go running right to him for attention but who knows she could be mad at him for leaving her for 3 weeks too.

I've gotten some GREAT suggestions and advice and I really did need it! Thank you all so much!

Doing some research now and making sure we'll make the right choice...I'm in touch with the right folks for sure....Oliver is doing a little better and is traveling around with me for a bit.

Remax...DO NOT BUY FROM THAT BREEDER.

I don't plan to BUY a dog from anyone...there are far too many who need a home.

That was not meant as an appreciative comment....maybe now just isn't the time for someone to feel quick witted.

Dogs do mourn the loss of their friends. We've seen it with our pups over the years. Oliver will get better as time passes.

Yes they do.

Our beagle mix loved our rottie x shepherd. And when we had to put him down last spring she missed him terribly. There was another dog in the house, but that didn’t seem to matter she missed the big dog. He would lay down in the back yard on top of the hill looking down on his kingdom (our back yard). He looked like an old lion out there,….the KING of BEASTS. Now, months past she lies down in his spot just as he did, looking down with that same look. And I can see it in her face that she is remembering that big old guy that she used to tease and torment as a pup. Brings tears to your eyes.
