I have a nikon p80
When shooting a macro, It won't focus if I get to close (say inch to a inch/half) to my subject.

When I zoom in to my subject, what is in the background becomes in focus and subject is blurry...
Does that make sense?

Is there something that I am doing wrong?

Macro is only going to give you a limited area and distance of focus. "area of confusion"

Most times the focus area will be elongated from side to side

You answered yourself when you said: "if I get to close". Your lens has a minimum focusing distance, and you are obviously closer than that allows. Switching to manual only gives you control over where the lens focuses, not the focusing range; only physically moving or using another camera/lens will affect that.

Thanks, I figured it out last night.. But you are right, I was "too close" and even switching to manual it made the background focus but not the subject.

I had to phsically back away some and it focused better.

Thanks,
