Help!!!!

I'm on borrowed time here. My computer keeps crashing. I tried an online virus program "Housecall" but the computer crashed before finishing. I tried a system restore, but the computer crashed and wouldn't reboot for anything.

I finally got the idea to reboot off the CD. It started running through the process (a step in the right direction) then got to a point where it asked me if I wanted to set up XP, or restore/repair an existing XP installation. I told it to restore/repair. Then it asked me what program did I want to log in on. I had no clue so I aborted.

Then for some reason it went to the screen (don't know what to call it) that gave me the option of starting in safe mode or whatever and I told it to start windows normally.... so, here I am...for now. Earlier it did the same thing and lasted about an hour before crashing.

When the computer first gave me an error message this morning, it said that the probably was most likely recently installed hardware or software that wasn't installed right. It suggested removing it...There isn't anything new on the computer, at least not that I installed.

Coincidentally (or maybe not) the computer is demanding that I install a new version of MSN messenger. I have not done this. I tried once and it failed and didn't do it again. The restore I attempted earlier today apparently did go through, despite the computer crashing on me in the process. I checked this when I got on just now. The restore point I chose was earlier than any attempt to install the new MSN.

I am looking for any advice on how to keep my computer working. I have managed to save the most dire of files by emailing them out or saving them to thumb drives (my CD write drive is broken) But there are lots of other files I really don't want to lose if I am forced to buy a new computer (this one is 5 yrs old, so I know I'm on borrowed time.)

Before you go too far try reloading your video driver.

:yeahthat: I recently had my graphics card replaced because my heatsink (sp?) went bad and subsequently made it go bad. My computer kept bluescreening. Does your computer get really hot?

I don't seem to have a disk for a video driver. Should I go to the website for my computer or is there a better source for this?

If you are running Vista it will check the internet for you when you go to device manager and rigth click on the Display adapters, then update drivers. If you have XP just find out who makes your graphics card and go to the site and download the appropriate driver for your card.

Ok, done. Found the right driver online, downloaded and installed. The reboot came up properly and quickly, so hopefully that did the trick.

Thanks.

You were on the right track with the CD boot. When it asks for what program, it's really asking where your Windows directory is. Normally, you just enter "1" and you should get a "C:" prompt. At that point, type in "CHKDSK /R". It will attempt to recover/rebuild Windows. This takes a while, as much as an hour. No guarantee that it will work, especially if it's really the video driver or something else that's messed up, but that's how you would do it.

BTW, all the entries are without the quotes....

Thanks, I may need that in the future, but this time it seems to be video driver. I haven't had any trouble since reloading that.

Good deal. Glad it's working.
