I have an Australian Red Heeler/Chow mix. She hates other animals ( except my cat ) I'm trying to get her and my boyfriends dog to get along. He has the sweetest Boxer/Lab mix. Great personality. We can kind of get them around each other but when the boxer makes one move to show she's excited the heeler nips her in the face. Its been sooo frustrating and I'm worried either the boxer is going to rip the heelers head off or that they might not ever get along :( Any advice?

Contact Dr. Marsha Reich - she is a dog behaviorist. We had a similar problem and could not handle it on our own. Her phone # is 301-384-3900. She's expensive but well worth it. There may be other issues that you are not aware of. Good luck!

Put a muzzle on the heeler until they get used to each other? Spray the heeler with water every time it nips (or trys to with the muzzle on) the boxer until the behavior is corrected.

I've heard good things about her.

Good chance ya'all are part of the problem (don't be offended, it's usually the owners who are the root of these types of issues) and someone like Marsha can help you see what you are doing wrong. There is also a chance the heeler has unknown medical issues that she may recognize and point out. Or, maybe she's (he?) just a grump (my female Dobe is a grump, LOL).

How old is the heeler? If she's been a solitary dog for a while and that Boxer is coming in toward her all chest puffed out and no submission, she's probably pissed that her queendom is at risk, so to speak. It can be very confusing for dogs when we suddenly launch them into new surroundings and confrontations. She may be just telling the Boxer "Hey step back bub". Not necessarily being aggressive or 'hateful' (dogs don't hate... you are either accepted as a pack member, or you are something that represents prey or defense).

Alpha Male

Being your dog looks at you as the alpha dog in your pack, you would need to sit with both dogs face to face and allow your interactions with both to affect thier expected behavior. Once your dog doesn't see the active new pack member as a threat, it will no longer react to it's perceived threats to you at the dogs movements. The dog is just trying to protect you.

Is BF's dog a male or female? Are both dogs altered? Where did you introduce them?

I'd spend some time walking them in a neutral territory, like a park. Get them used to walking with each other, and then go from there. It's really handy to keep your dog on the leash at first, so when she tries to nip at his dog, you can give a jerk and your "no" command or whatever correction word you use on her. It might take a while for them to get used to each other, but you don't want to rush it. You may also want to separate one of them in a room with a baby gate so they can see, smell, and get used to each other.

she really just doesnt like kids or dogs. I remember when she was about 6 months old she RAN down our driveway and tried to attack a big lap that was wondering down the road UGH

The heeler is 3 and has always been the only dog. The cat came before her. The boxer is soooo goofy and sweet. the heeler will go up to her and sniff her and the boxer smacks her with her paw just playing and the heeler bites her LOL POOORRRR GOOFY BOXER. If she would just relax this would be easier but shes got the BEST personality ever and shes sooo excitced to play with my dog lol big goof.
