Associate Professors Emek Köse (math) and Amy Henderson (economics) together published a chapter in a volume titled “Mathematics for Social Justice: Resources for the College Classroom.”

Edited by Gizem Karaali and Lily S. Khadjavi, this volume “aims to support college instructors who wish to incorporate ideas and instances of various social justice issues into their classroom by providing them with concrete examples of mathematics connected to a range of contexts.” The volume consists of both essays and modules.

The St. Mary’s College professors’ chapter explores the important environmental and social justice issues around industrial hog production. Henderson said, “This compelling topic motivates student engagement with mathematical modeling and multivariate statistical analysis.” She said while the modules have just recently published, “St. Mary's College students have had the opportunity to engage with the material developed for this volume over the past four years.”
