Here come the speed cameras

How would cities get money if the residents weren't irresponsible maniacs?

🤷‍♀️
Your position implies that everybody who speeds is an irresponsible maniac. The reality of school zones is that we don't have a problem. Why are we trying to solve a problem we don't have? As always, follow the money. Calvert made almost a half million that they spent none of on public safety. If you think our program isn't based on the fact that they can haul down money outside the budget, you're being naive.

He added that high traffic volumes, officer safety concerns and calls for other matters limit the ability to conduct stops during busy school hours.
High traffic volumes usually slow traffic so why are high traffic volumes causing speeding in school zones but not other areas?

I get so tired of hearing about officer safety concerns. You are a police officer - it is not supposed to be a safe job! In fact, my job is more dangerous and you don't hear me say anything about farmer safety concerns. Police officer doesn't even fall in the top 10 most dangerous jobs so give me an effing break over this feel-good verbiage!!

And calls for other matters - it's your damn job and you get a tingle in your leg sticking your nose and badge in matters that it doesn't always belong.

Yeah I watch too many YouTube videos showing corrupt cops abusing their authority...

You are arguing the wrong point though. Officer safety isn't a factor in not enforcing the speed limit in school zones. Its the simple fact that there are no crashes in school zones that ever affect students caused by speeding. Waste of officer hours is the real reason they don't do it. Been here for over 30 years, don't recall one crash in a school zone involving students caused by speeding. And only one that involved students, maybe 10 years ago. Up the road a bit some lady crashed into a school bus entering or leaving Lettie Dent, maybe. Failure to yield, not speeding.

That's why the statistics showing how beneficial they are always in citation reduction, never incident reduction. Cause you cant subtract from zero. We've got 99 traffic safety problems in the county, but school zones aint one of them.

I agree with you, but see they (government/LEO) can't argue that point, hence the reason for their statements I quoted above. Gaslighting.

So now, where do we think they will place them.

Good reading here. Especially page six. Localities and counties have been caught before playing fast and loose with the guidlines on page 5 and "What is a School Area vs Zone?" on page 6. We have no school crossings that I'm aware of. I expect them to play a bit fast and loose with that definition.

A “School Area” is the area surrounding, and within one-half mile of, a school building or property and within which motor vehicle, pedestrian
or bicycle traffic is substantially generated or influenced by the school.

 A “School Zone” is a designated roadway segment within up to a half-mile radius of school buildings or grounds, along which school related
activities occur, and/or along which there is a school crossing.

St John’s school was mentioned in the article. Wouldn’t surprise me if they set one up there but on 235, though the school itself doesn’t have an entrance/exit on 235.
There are crosswalks at Spring Ridge. Will they put a camera there? Maybe. I don’t see any cameras going in at the Leonardtown complex because of the 2 traffic lights already slowing traffic. I imagine they will probably put cameras at the Loveville complex - that is ripe for profit because of the already reduced speed limit there. Little Flower in Great Mills? Hmmmm

Are school busses and LEOs subject to these camera fines or will they be swept under the rug?

Lots of abuse of this system coming our way.

St Johns is a perfect example of where you don't need cameras. Traffic on 235 has no bearing on the safety of students there. If 235 doesn't have a school zone sign there now, it shouldn't sprout one.

Crosswalks are not the same as a school crossing. No students below high school are allowed to walk to school. "School crossings" are specifically crosswalks where students are crossing. Ah, here it is.... Seems Great Mills, L-town and Spring Ridge have marked crossings with signs. But of course, no student can walk across the road to Spring Ridge. Not allowed.

Not all schools need to have school crossings. Not all crosswalks along a school route need be designated as school crossings. This does not prevent the use of crosswalk markings and W11-2 signs at other crosswalks in the same area in accordance with Section 2C.50.

Little Flower qualifies, limit there is 45 there, so you need to be going 57 to trigger it. Loveville, maybe not a steady enough flow of traffic.

Same for Hollywood elementary. Even for kids that lived right across the street, even though there is a crosswalk. My daycare lady would walk them across and sent them on their way for the rest of the short duration. My sis lives in Town Creek and her daughter took the bus to elementary, but when at Esperanza, she sometimes walked or rode her bike.

I would think if School Zones are such a problem, then why hasn't Law Enforcement concentrated on the area years ago with heavy enforcement? Perhaps they have. I don't know.

No, of course they haven't been a problem and the sheriff is using the fig leaf of officer safety to explain why they haven't been doing speed enforcement in school zones. Funny, isn't that the same excuse they used for not doing traffic enforcement on the main drag during rush hour when his predecessor wanted red light cameras?

They are using school zones because that's the only place state law allows them outside SHA road work areas and a couple of high visibility ones like 210. It was part of the automated enforcement industry ghost written legislation made to give politicians the "You just want children to die!" club to beat objections down with.

Obviously clueless about traffic on 235 in front of Spring Ridge Middle, Great Mills Road in front of Great Mills HS, Rt 5 in front of Leonardtown Middle AND Leonardtown HS. Just to name the obvious. ANY speeding in those areas is grounds for the Navy to practice air-to-ground live munitions training. Or do we need a certified high death count before you admit the truth - we have a speeding problem. Not everything is a government conspiracy so stop making crap up to justify blasting up and down the roadways on your crotch rocket.

Obviously clueless about what I drive and ride and how. Your histrionics are nice but I'll settle for even a low injury count. One. Just one injury caused by a car in any school zone involving a student or staff. Please, I've looked and it doesn't appear to have ever happened.

Oh. And what do you think I've made up? Details please. I try to present facts. If I have a wrong one I'll correct it.

Oh we all know how you feel you own the left lane and will go as fast as you please. You've made that known in previous posts. Histrionics? How about your panic porn about the government out to get us with their speed cameras? One example? Fine, the guy who was speeding like a maniac and killed the Amish farmer in front of Banniker Elementary, also a school zone. There's one. Is that enough or do you need two people dead?

Own? No. As fast as I please? Left lane passing slower traffic yes. Like a lot of people. As fast as I please is about 7-9 over. Hardly blasting around. And it depends on traffic and conditions.

Panic? What panic? Stating that the purpose of the program is revenue isn't panic. It's my opinion based on the facts I presented. Feel free to present opposing opinions based on facts as you wish.

And "get us"? The fine is a low $40, no insurance or MVA reporting. That bolsters my case for it being about revenue. If it was really a danger, there would be real fines and points.

1.Students are not currently nor have they in the past been injured or killed be speeders in the 30 plus years I've been here.
2. The Sheriff's office has only ever expressed concern about this topic when proposing cameras. Like red light running with the previous Sheriff. Otherwise it's a non-issue.
3. The state requires all operators of ASE systems to produce reports showing the financials of the system. Vendor cost, expenses, revenue, gross and net. And what they spent that revenue on. That's how I know what CCSO spent their half million on.

Oh, I get it now. We need kids to die to satisfy your speed camera requirements.
Nice guy. Sleep well.
