Here's a tough one for someone (not me) to figure out ...

I bought a computer from some dude. He only wanted 250.00 for it.
Well....when I went to upgrade to IE & or whatever the newest is, it wouldn't let me do it because it said I did not have a genuine copy of Windows installed.

So I called the dude and he laughed and said... "I reformatted the hard drive and I only bought 1 copy of Windows to install on all the computers I sold. What do you want for 250.00?"

Now...everytime someone sends me an e-mqail with an attachment I have to verify my copy of Windows...so I can't really do anything.

:whew:

Now....is there a way to bypass this?

Or do I trash this computer and go get another one?

You could buy a copy of Windows (perhaps a used one on eBay that pre-dates Vista), format the HD on your computer, and reinstall the legal copy of Windows.

Or you could find a CD key crack code online and use the version you've got.

The way I understood it....was that if you install windows on your computer...that's it! You can't install that copy on any more computers. If you do, the user will get a message saying it isn't authentic.
Is this right?
I mean....this is the same thing the dude that sold me this computer did. He installed it on several computers. Since mine wasn't "first" it gives me a "not authentic" message.

Go online and buy a copy of Win XP not sure if it is \still sold in stores..
Install it onto PC.
Live and learn...sorry you have to learn this way.

Another option, call Microsoft and tell you bought PC and seller lost serial number..they might reset it for you.
My laptop crashed, I reloaded Win XP and went to register it online, Microsoft kicked it back as I all ready had used that registration number.
So I called, explained problem assured them I did own PC and just reinstalled WinXP...Tech gave me a HUGE, LONG line of numbers to enter into the PC and dadaaa...I was all set.
No more prolems with WinXP.

1. Find crack code to activate the current copy. Be careful, as MS is constantly expanding the list of known pirated keys. If you get caught up in this, it can be bad juju.

2. Purchase a copy of Windows, install and activate legitimately.

3. Report person to Microsoft for piracy. Often times, they will provide you with a copy of Windows as a thank you. Not always, but sometimes.

That pretty much sums up your Windows options. Bu,t you always have the opportunity to load a different operating system...

I vote for this option.

Personally, I would go for the piracy report. If someone tries to scam me and then laughs about it, I am so going to make their life miserable.

Add in the admission of multiple computers, and it gets fun....

There are three ways to report piracy.
Method 1: Email piracy@microsoft.com

Method 2: Call the Microsoft Anti-Piracy Hotline at
(800) RU-LEGIT.

Method 3: Go to the following web page to fill out an online reporting form: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/ReportingUs.mspx

Oh, and post his name here. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, PM it to me and I'll post it.

For some reason, I keep picturing an eMachine held together with duct tape.

I imagine the scam went farther than the operating system...

I'm thinking that the guy never bought an authentic copy in the first place. He likely downloaded a pirated version from some fellow in Hong Kong over a P2P system, found a key code crack online, and has been using the combination to put Windows on all of the computers he refurbishes.

As a previous poster mentioned, Microsoft is forever expanding its database of known pirated key codes...it's likely yours has just been found.

You should get a pop up with your " windows not genuine" notice - follow it to MS - inform them you bought a PC with Pirated XP give the Rats Details

Name
Address
etc

MS - will most likely give you a valid Product Key since you were victim of Fraud ........

I recently built a computer for a friend of mine. Since I'm avoiding Vista like the plague, I went with XP Home. Bought it off Tigerdirect.com for $100 (including shipping)
