Here's my dumb question:

Catt awhile back suggested I give Claudia - 15 years old and quite the senile old lady - some cottage cheese to put some weight on her. She won't eat it plain so I mix it with her wet catfood and she gobbles it right up.

My dumb question is:

Her teeth are old, like her, which is why she can't eat crunchies. Will the calcium in the cottage cheese help that? Do cats process calcium like humans do?

Yes and you can also give her yogurt. from Hoover

I thought cats were lactose intolerant after nursing. Have I been misinformed? Cause I know Fry loves his occasional cream.

dont mean to get gross on anyone, but our one cat Fleas is very thin, he eats alot, but he is mostly bones. if we started putting yogurt or cottage cheese in his food, would this mess up his bowels? he is really old, and already has problems (usually diarrhea) so it would be nice to put weight on him but i dont want to make his potty habits worse.

Calcium is pretty much metabolized the same in all mammals that I can think of. It plays an important part in bone development/maintenance and is highly important in muscle function. I'd think any calcium in her diet would do her good.

Have you had him checked out by a vet?

no :ohwell: he isnt in pain or anything, other than his bm's he is happy and healthy. we arent sure how old he is cause 4d rescued him, but my guess is really really old.

Diarrhea isn't normal. Maybe he needs a new diet, maybe he's got some intestinal parasites. I'd take him in and have him checked out.

but wouldnt the other cats get it if it was a parasite? i thought about a different diet but we have 4 cats and we arent always home to feed them meals (they have bowls we just fill in the morning) so we wouldnt be able to feed them different things. but i guess we should take him into a vet. soooo we live in hollywood- whats a good vet to take him too that wont make us go broke?

kvj you can go to three notch animal hospital on 235 by I think its the thomas summerville bldg? I could be wrong about the bldg name its right passed wildewood. I used dr.feldhaus shes great and spends time talking to you shes not the type to get you in and out in 2min but since I don't live close to there anymore I go to all kinds up in callaway and that is run by a husband and wife who are also both great but I don't think you want to travel that far for a vet.

How old are your other cats? Has this cat ever been dewormed? Where'd 4D get him? If he is really old, he may not be able to handle a parasite load like a younger cat might be able to. I'd say take him to a vet and have him checked out. If he's got any type of parasite, chances are your others do too. It's worth it to treat them all at once. But you need to take him to a vet. It's not healthy for him to have diarrhea for 8 or 9 months. No wonder he's skinny.

No kidding. I'd be miserable if I had the runs for almost a year! I know I preach it all the time, but Petplan insurance really is the way to go to save money on serious health issues. They're inevitable.
