Luke 9:1 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.
7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead, 8 others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. 9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.
OK... here's Herod again. He's like the wicked step prince who won't stop annoying everyone! He had John the Baptist murdered because he couldn't face his friends after making his stepdaughter do a pole dance for them.
He had John the Baptist murdered so his wife would stay with him avoiding a huge scandal.
He had John the Baptist murdered so his friends would say he has power to do as he pleases.
He had John the Baptist beheaded and now he was scared John was going to come back and get him.
John the Baptist called him out. No one does that to the tetrarch.
A tetrarch was a symbol of the power of Rome! No one could get away with insulting Rome!
John the Baptist talked about eternity! That's what bugged Herod.... eternity.
John hit a nerve and his demise at the hand of Herod, worried Herod.
Now Herod had to see if this was John come back from the dead!
Herod's dad ordered all the babies to be murdered back when Jesus was born.
- Jesus was in Egypt.
- John didn't live in Bethlehem or Nazareth.
- Herod's father missed.
- Now Herod had John murdered for a pole dance.
What if John the Baptist came back and was hunting Herod!!!!
Verse 9 says "He tried to see Him."
