I'm flying to Tampa tomorrow to visit my sisters. I booked the flight and rental car on 8/4/....
TODAY, I got an e-mail from Dollar giving me instructions on using and driving my EV. I dont remember reserving an EV. I dont want an EV. My destination is lucky to have a PUBLIX store and Julio's gasoline station.. About an hour or 1 1/2 hours from TPA, do I wanna be stranded with no electricity and no charging stations??? No.
I called Dollar and talked to a CSR. He's off-shore,, apparently, "allo (untelligible mumbling)".... "why you concil? what you reservation?" why you cancol"..

"we 'ave no mo cah"... "wait" ,,,,,,"we 'ave cah , gasoline...why you cancol?"

so for $90.00 more I have a gasoline "cah". Turns out HERTZ and DOLLAR push EV's..... heavily. I didnt know that until I got the last minute e-mail today.

I guess we have to specifically request a gasoline powered car.

Damn, I've only rented one once, and I specifically asked for it, but I have read that they are slapping customers into them with no heads up, and no information given. Hertz, they sent me links with familiarization vids days before my rental.

But you are right, they need to make sure the customer is okay with it, and make sure the vehicle is charged and that they show the customer how it works. Anything else is just stupidity.

TPD, nah for them, its simple fleet math. Maint costs, especially if you only keep them 50K or so, are going to be virtually nil. A set of tires perhaps.

We rented a Tesla when we went to Miami. Rental price was cheaper than a gasoline vehicle. Ads stated something about no fill up charge for gas. When we picked it up, there was an electric recharge fee that cost more than a tank of gas would. AND, the vehicles will only charge up to 80%. Drove from the Miami airport to South Beach and it was already down to 67%. And they didn't give instructions on using the touchscreen - it was NOT intuitive. Ended up using Googlemaps on my phone instead of the navigation system. Luckily we didn't need to find a charging station as we only needed it one night. Nice vehicle, not worth renting it though.
