Went to the tack shop on Clarke's Landing Road today to get Tipper and son's dog some more heartworm pills and she said the owner is giving up the business, therefore, they had none. Any other suggestions as to where to get them locally without having to go to the vet? She's never missed a pill, so I'm not concerned about her having heartworms, but she needs one on the 24th and didn't want to have to pay the vet $60 to tell me she doesn't have heartworms and another $40 for the pills....Any ideas?

Does Well Pet Clinic supply those items?
I have gotten them there for my dog before without a checkup, as she has been a patient there before ( granted, a bad patient because she got so excited she howled and I had to wait outside with the OTHER bad dog), but son's dog hasn't been there, so don't know if I can get it for his dog. He really can't afford to spend $100 to get the heartworm pills, but his dog needs them. $35 he can swing.

I don't know what else to suggest. Good luck on your quest. :yay:

My dog died 2 years ago, so I have not kept up on all this stuff.

They never had hearworm tabs at Mr Willeys...only flea meds..I make my own heart worm meds out of cattle ivermec....what breed of dog..cant do it with collie or shelty types...you can go to Loveville feedmill (stauffers feedmill...hen yard) get a generic bottle of 1% ivermec they should also be able to tell you how to do it....(50 100 lb dogs for $30)

Or check EBAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!for the brand/type you are used to.. good luck
Maybe it was the flea stuff I got there. You're probably right. Tipper is the beagle mix - you cut her nails, I slammed her tail in the door. I think I'll just call the well pet clinic. Son has a boxer. I'm not comfortable mixing it myself. I'd worry I would do it wrong and harm the grand-dog. I absolutely love that Boxer.

Well Pet charges us $25 for a HW test and $10 for the office visit. They will not give out heartworm meds without the test. If the test comes out negative, they will sell you the pills individually or by the box whichever way you prefer. I usually get my heartworm meds from www.Ebay.com or Well Pet. I can also pick meds up on this website from time to time from fellow users who no longer need them.

I hope he has the dog tested annually for heartworms. Giving meds orally are not 100%, especially if you're giving the once-a-month preventative. A dog can vomit the pill and you may not notice it. I'm sure Appy will agree, giving ivermectin to a dog with heartworms can be deadly.

Of course you can treat them and it is risky. My point for BSgirl was that if you DO NOT know that they have heartworms, the risk is greatly increased.

But, why are you dealing with somebody who apparently doesn't give their dogs the preventative.

This is why I responded like I did not telling her to get her tested first..

Neighbor's dog never missed a pill either...contracted heartworms. Discovered it at the dog's annual checkup.

I don't disagree with the fact that meds are expensive, and if you have a regular vet that sees your pets on a regular basis, they are willing to work with you.

My philosophy on vets, meds, etc. is very different from a lot of people on here. Good luck BS.

OH and the boxer m I had was being treated for mange...which is several times the HW dosage with ivermec and weekly not monthly. Under directions on amount by vet..So that probably did not help. I had forgotten about that till I was thinking about it when I was at the barn this am....that dog got alot more ivermec then a dog being given a preventitive for HW.

BUT, if you knew he had heartworms, you'd have treated him differently. That's the point of being certain they DO NOT have heartworms before giving meds.
