I had to dispose of my cheepass Vizio tv this morning because its darn nearly impossible to find a technician, but more-so, the chinese lady at support need a series of photos of my screen and the sales recepit from 3-4 years ago.. Plus a new Samsung was very affordable..

But when one connects a new TV to the cable box doesnt it store that iformation, including IP's and cable passwords and have access to your laptop or desk top???

By a Chinese company???

How are you connecting it to the Cable box? If it's just video inputs (HDMI) then you aren't sending any information other than possibly remote control commands back to the box.

As for your TV connecting to your home network, you shouldn't have any computer network shares setup in a promiscuous manner but even if you did it could only access what was shared. The TV isn't going to "log into" your computer and peruse for interesting files. And if you do have sharing enabled or password-less logins then you are already screwed if you are hooked up to the internet anyways.

What you SHOULD do is if you have a modern router you should setup a guest network that is only used by your smart devices that you don't want to have access to devices like your computer on your main network, then it won't matter.
