Hey Guy in the Black truck heading for the F.D.

Just an idea

Okay im reading the bashing going on, so lets get this right. Noone in thier private car, truck, bike has the right or privalege to run lights, cut off others just to get to the station or call. The issue's here deals with their tunnel vision when the siren goes off. Solution would be contacting thier station and filing a complaint and believe me at least in Calvert action will be taken.

Lets talk about training for those who are willing to give thier time away from thier families, energy since most Fire/EMS also hold full time jobs with goverment or private sector.

For driving emergency vehicles it takes 39 hours of class and 6 hours of practical driving not to mention if your learning Air Break pieces it take even longer and this is in addition to the 40 hours of driving that your station makes you run.

For basic Firefighter: 102 hours classroom time

EMT: Which I am in, 2 nights a week, 4 hours per night and 8 Saturdays until June.

These are just some of the training that we go through.

Once you have this training it doesnt stop here, there are drills, practicals, learning sessions, refreshers... ect ect ect.

My point is this, I am over 40, not stuck on myself for doing things I feel is right. The satisfaction that I continue to have from being part of a special group of normal people who make a difference is an awsome feeling. I only wish that instead of starting so late in life that I would have began many years ago. If you have time to bash those who make a difference then you have time to join a local department yourself.

thanks

I must add to what mike44md said - being a volunteer EMS provider myself.

Yes - the guy in the black truck needs to have some sort of action taken against him for what he did. There is no need for it, as we have lost providers in the past to accidents on the way to the station. It does happen - and when you first join, you have that excitement of "Gotta get on the piece and go on the call! no matter what". But there is no need for driving like that to the station.

But there are also people in this county that won't pull over for emergency vehicles -flashing lights, blowing the horn, and wailing siren and it still doesn't help. I know that's another can of worms.... but its one thing that harms our safety enroute to help those who have called 911.

Basically, if you see someone driving like that again - get their plate number and the plate of the department they are in... and call that department. Action should/will be taken by most.

That was so well stated, and you didn't even insult anyone in the process.

Most of the time when I see people who aren't moving out of the way, it's because they can't. I'm not saying that many people aren't oblivious, because I see them on the road every time I drive. So, I appreciate your position.

In New York, the volunteer Firefighters have a blue light in their cars on the dashboard that they would turn on if they were headed to a call. We would move over for them just like a cop car. They would also meet the truck at the scene. I thought this made a lot of sense, and was surprised they do not do this here.

Thats a whole other book, not a great idea for a area like 235...

But you did. What Elaine was referring to is your comment about a lack of "balls" being the reason many of us do not volunteer. I must admit that frosted me a little as well. Intimating that a lack of courage was one of the reasons for not volunteering is more than a little presumptuous, don't you think?

So you would aprove of a 18 year old in his Personal vehicle driving fast, and even fast now with a lil blue light on his dash?

I have been in a 4 ton firetruck with over 100 lights, two sirens, and air horns and people pull out in front of us... whats going to happen to this 18 year old with a lil blue light?

Obviously this debate can go on forever, believe me its going on in every MFRI Chiefs Meeting. On both sides we need to learn to be more cautious and courteous. So lets just call it a draw... : :elaine:

Actually I put "Have the balls or time"....

Some people have the time, just not the will

Some people dont have the time, it does take alot...

Am I? Both vehicles are running red lights and speeding.

That's not what I said, that's what you said...and I don't believe those lights and sirens give you the right to just barrel through lights without looking, or barrel through traffic without being careful.

Ok, this is getting silly. You just stay in your little box and judge the world as it spins around you. In the mean time, I'll be out there trying to change the things that are wrong, and make better the things that are not... Thanks for your time

Thanks. Try not to kill anyone while you're at it...running red lights and all.
