When can I start putting my hummingbird feeders out? I hadthem out till late last year but the hummingbirds stopped coming by when it got cold. I put them in the basement. Now with spring springing and birds all outside chirping... when can we expect our little buddy hummingbirds to come back to this area? Is it too soon to put the hummingbird feeders out?

I always put mine out the last week of March.

So when the kiddies get up from their naps, out go the feeders. Last year, I had one land on the picnic table when I was drinking coffee. Pretty cool!!

I use this recipe.

Boil 4 parts water.
Mix 1 part ordinary white granulated sugar.
Stir and allow the mixture to cool.
When the nectar is room temperature, fill your clean hummingbird feeder.

I usually one put one out until around June. They do show up now but it's sporadic and there aren't that many. Then around the middle to end of May the go off to mate and have their babies. Then they don't really get going full force until June..sometimes mid-June.

I usually have tons of them and they empty 5 feeders daily (sometimes I fill twice a day). But until then, I just use the one and empty it every couple of days and clean it.

I dont have to boil water, mine is sooooooo hot now. Guess I should turn down the water heater. I mix suger and hot water and go. DO NOT use red food coloring to get your clear feeders red.

Hey Cat, how full do you fill your feeders that you have to refill them every day. I change mine once a week or so andf I get a ton of humbirds. Do you have really small feeders?

Yes, they do. It's an amazing sight to see. I know she's posted pictures of it before.

She hogs all the hummingbirds in the area I think.

Nope, they're 32 ounces each. You'd really have to see how many I have...it's amazing.

My gosh, I thought I had a ton. They dive bomb us every time we go outside, they get in the garage and thats a pain to deal with. This year I plan to try real hard to get one to land on my hand. I love my hummingbirds. It does appear that you and I are bird hogs. :huggy:

There are a bunch of links to the pictures in there from a couple of years back. You have to copy and paste the address into the browser window but it looks like they still work.
