Hey umm.... chihuahuas

Gus, Lucy & Chica's mom!
sooo all my life I have had med to large breed dogs. We recently adopted a Chihuahua (we renamed her Chica) and I'm not overly familiar with smaller breeds. Do they sleep A LOT? A LOOOOOOOOT. She seems to be in fine shape. She's healthy and happy (when shes awake). Playful, eats well, gets along GREAT with everyone in the house (and outside of the house) etc... just just sleeps... a lot. I was wondering if that's normal for the breed? Or is she just lazy?!?! (man I got 2 lazy dogs! Wth!)

I had a chihuahua with jack russell mix for 12 years, her name was Drew. I had to put her down in Dec unfortunately due to medical issues.

I miss her horribly. These dogs are typically "one" person dogs, at least mine was, lol!

My niece has a long haired chihuahua and she's very social and sweet. Drew was not like that, she liked "me" and "me" only. She didn't get along too well with other dogs, but liked cats, I guess cause they didn't bother her! LOL

I think they're adorable dogs. Good luck with the new addition to your family!

Sophie is about 8 or so and we literally rescued her from getting the needle at the Howard Co shelter 3 years ago. She wakes up happy every day; despite her recent blindness. She loves the cats and our other rescue dog, Dexter. She loves my husband and I and our friends but does not like children at all. She snores and snorts and sleeps as much as most dogs do (a lot!) Would I ever be owned by another Chih/mix? Probably not... because they would never be *Sophie*

It could very much just be the way she is, some dogs are more go getters and others are more relaxed. Maybe you can ask her foster how she was there? The stress of a new home will make them a little more sleeping as stress is hard on everyone, even if she doesn't seem effected by her new surroundings. When I take pups to a new place or show for the first time I am very mind of possible effects of stress on them. I took 5 mo old pups on a outing this week-end and they were awake and playing with each other in the crate the whole way to the meeting and played like crazy at the meeting, but the way home they slept the whole way, and were ready to cause trouble as soon as we walked in the door.

If you notice more sleeping then normal for a dog over a long period of time without reason a vet visit would be in order. However, I do not see this as the case.

Congrats on your new addition.

our chihuahua is 2 yrs old.we have had since she was a young pup. she goes to the barn with me and every where else I go,she loves to follow. so plays hard and sleeps hard. she will chill with me and lay on my lap...we call it her cuddle time.but if we are doing something .she is in on it too.I think they get use to the daily activities so if you are more active than her last home she may sleep less....good luck, she is adorable!

The chihuahua we have keeps our beagles entertained and helps with temp testing any new arrivals. He's the only dog with a real job around here. We try to run the beagles every day at least once and the chihuahau provides the prey drive fun they love and he usually gets the best of anything that actually catches him.

Ours sleeps a lot but he definitely gets his exercise too.

I just remembered something when we first got our chihuahua/Yorkie mix I thought he slept to much also and at times seemed out of it and asked the vet about it and she said it could be from low blood sugar to buy some corn syrup and rub it on his gums.Maybe talk to your vet also and ask about it :)
