High School Language Class

My son wants to take a language but he's having trouble deciding which one. He nixed French right away - being a history/war buff, he's anti France. So he's choosing between Spanish, German, and Latin.
There are many Spanish speaking immigrants here, so that may be a good choice.
He's considering German because there is German heritage on both sides.
Latin ----my old teacher got a hold of him at open house and he's a good salesman.
I'm not sure if any one would be more beneficial than the other. He's planning on going into computer programming.
Any ideas on which way to guide him?

I don't know what Latin has to do with computer programming.

IMO Spanish is definitely the way to go. I've seen employment listings wanting proficiency in both English and Spanish, but never English and German or English and Latin.

Spanish is definately the most beneficial in the long run. I took 5 years, 8th grade, and all 4 years of high school, then minored in Spanish in College. Jobs are very willing to pay more to bilingual people, and Spanish is in high demand. It has definately paid off for me.

I had Spanish, French and Latin in jr. high and high school. I use the Latin all the time (because English and many other languages are based on Latin), Spanish just to show off occasionally, and I haven't spoken a word of French since I graduated.

I say pick Latin :yay:

Bre,

Check around, but when I went to college I never saw “Latin” offered. High School may be his only opportunity to take it.

No, I'm not crazy and if you took two years of French and German, where'd you pick up the Spanish?

A whole century ago, huh?

Latin is good for the vocabulary. All the smart kids took Latin.

I took Spanish. I loved it and I still use it.

:yeahthat: But I'd pick Spanish over Latin. Latin is a dead language, and unless he plans on having a career where it would be beneficial, Spanish is more useful.

BTW Bre,

Latin is tough. The 1st year I B'd my way along and the 2nd year, I was able to C my way along.

I studied my ass off too, but I was use to studying twice as much as my fellow students.

Spanish is easy peasy.

The internet, where else?

We didn't have computers when I was in HS. :frown:

I did take Latin in middle school, and I found it interesting, but it was not offered in HS.

We had a REALLY cute German AFS student. (He was taking French)

I'm torn between Spanish - for everyday conversational use, and Latin as the root of language. I was thinking 2 years conversational Spanish, then pick up the Latin as a Junior. Latin required a great deal of study time, as I recall, and freshman year is a hard enough adjustment.
He can do German in college, if he wants.

Latin is a completely dead language, even the Church doesn't use it anymore. Spanish is going to be the national language at the rate we're going.
