High School requirements

Sorry if this has been a subject before, I was unable to find a thread on it.

Here goes... I have a question about high school course requirements.

My son is in eighth grade and is taking Algebra I and Spanish I. He will be required to take 2 years of world language and 3 years of math in high school.

I understand that he will have to take Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calc. Will he also be required to take Spanish 2 and Spanish 3?

TIA

Do not quote me on this since it has been awhile but I believe that yes since he has already taken Spanish 1 he would have to take Spanish 2 and 3 unless he chooses another language. Is that what you were asking?

Yes, that is what I was asking. Spanish is not doing it for him. He is getting good grades, he just doesn't like it.

Ok I just looked up information on graduation and they have changed things since I was in school, which was not that long ago, so I have no idea. I will keep looking for you but I would suggest giving the high school a call and asking. They would be able to tell you which way for sure.

Switch it to an American Sign Language (ASL) courses if his school offer it. I'm sure he will like this class a whole lot better.

From what I am reading he can switch it and take two years of another language. The only difference I would see is if he was wanting to go for the Certificate of Merit along with his dipolma, because then he would have to take an extra year of language in high school where as it stands now if he continued on with Spanish he would not have to.

It depends on what career path he chooses to go into in high school....Call the school as the requirements are forever changing and if he want to do something in the Tech Center(if in St Marys), that will count for some of his credits also

Oh....if he does choose to go with the 3 languages....he will get credit for the one he is taking now, if he passes it

Is learning ebonics being offered yet??? Just curious. It seems to be a common language around these days.

you have to have 2 years passed of a language other than English, period...Spanish 1 counts as one year. Alg. counts as one of those for the math requirements as well.

It depends on what "career pod" you are in....My 2 older boys didn't have to have a language at all and they both graduated....my girl took Spanish in 8th grade(and passed) and she isn't required to take another language because she is now in the "tech center career path"

I wish I'd taken Spanish. I took 3 years of Latin and the Spanish would have been so much more useful.

As another posted mentioned it depends on what career track a student is on. That being said, an 8th grader should plan for the most rigorous course of study. Colleges recommend that a student take 3 years of a language.

for the kid she was speaking of, if he needed languages, then that is what he would be needing to graduate..Sorry about that! I shouldve been more specific!

He is thinking he wants to be a "Dual Completer". He will have to complete the college requirements as well as a Tech Center Pathway. He was thinking robotics or criminal justice.
