Charles Co. High school student actors prepare for spring productions

Student actors from Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) seven high school theater departments are rehearsing for spring productions. On the schedule this season are exciting shows to delight audience members of all ages.

First in the spring play season are shows from Henry E. Lackey and St. Charles high schools. Lackey students will perform Roald Dahl’s “Matilda the Musical” March 26-28. The show is a musical based on the popular children’s book Matilda. Matilda is a five-year-old girl with the power of telekinesis. Matilda has cruel parents and bonds with her teacher, Miss Honey, who recognizes her extraordinary talents. Together Matilda and Miss Honey work to manage the school’s evil headmaster, Miss Trunchbull who despises children. Show time for all three performances is 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. St. Charles will present the musical comedy “Xanadu” March 27-29. The 1980s-centered production follows a Greek muse named Kira who descends from Mount Olympus. Kira meets an artist, Sonny Malone, who is struggling with his creativity. Kira then helps Malone open the first nightclub roller skate disco called Xanadu. Follow the story as Kira falls in love with Malone, which is forbidden since he is a mortal. Show times are 7 p.m. March 27-28 and 2 p.m. March 29. North Point and Thomas Stone high schools are set to present their spring productions the weekend of April 2-4.

North Point will present “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Show times are April 2-3 at 7 p.m., and April 4 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. The musical follows a young ambitious businessman, J. Pierrepont Finch. Finch, a window washer, believes he can be a successful businessman after he reads a book called “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Finch is naive and believes he can climb the business ladder without hard work. Thomas Stone student actors will present a fan favorite, Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka” April 2-4. Show time for all three performances is 6:30 p.m. All tickets are $5 and children ages 4 and under are free. Stone honors the CCPS employee badge for two free admissions. The musical is about Willy Wonka, a businessman and owner of a chocolate factory. Wonka is in need of someone to take over the factory and starts a search for a successor. He launches a golden ticket contest for five winners to visit his factory in the hopes one will take over its operations. Wonka hides golden tickets in his chocolate, and the five winners join Wonka on a tour of his chocolate factory. For more information, call Stone at 301-645-2601.

McDonough student actors will present a Disney favorite “Newsies” the weekend of April 16-18. Show times are 7 p.m. April 16-17, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. April 18. The popular production sets stage in New York City and follows Jack Kelly, a newspaper delivery boy who leads a group of other newsboys. Kelly and his fellow newspaper carriers are outraged when the publisher of a big company, New York World, increases their delivery fees in an attempt to outsell competitors. Kelly leads his group in a battle against unfair working conditions. Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $10 for students, senior citizens and military members, and $9 for thespians with ID and children under the age of 6. La Plata High School will present the musical “Mamma Mia” on April 16-18. The musical follows Sophie, who is engaged to be married to her fiancé, Sky. Sophie has never met her father and wants him to give her away at her upcoming wedding. In reading her mother’s diary, Sophie learns the identity of three men she believes could be her father. Follow Sophie as she meets her potential fathers and stresses out her mother, Donna, in the process. Performance times are 6:30 p.m. April 16-17, and 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. April 18. Westlake High School rounds out the spring play season with the popular musical “Hairspray” April 23-25. Performance time for all three shows is 7 p.m. The musical sets stage in Baltimore during the 1960s and follows teenager Tracy Turnblad. Turnblad dreams of being a dancer on the popular Corny Collins Show. Turnblad lands a spot on the show, but also is criticized by some for being overweight. Follow the adventures of Turnblad and her friends as she seeks to help integrate the show cast and celebrate her body image. Ticket prices are $8 for adults, $6 for students and $5 for students with their CCPS identification badge. Westlake honors the CCPS employee badge for two free tickets.
