High Tension

When most think of the horror films of today they think 'cheesy and cheap'. There's not many horror flicks that stand out, especially nowadays. This film High Tension is an exception, it is very 'different'. The film is French and was originally spoken in French tongue. The first twenty minutes are irritating to a critic because the words don't match up with the mouth-speak so well. However, after this the action and horror start to play a much larger role and the dialouge is cut short.

As I said before this horror/thriller film is very different on many aspects. This is a slasher type horror, perhaps the Friday the 13th of it's time. The killer does almost everything you might not expect him to. Ever have one of those horror flicks where you can basically tell what's going to happen? This is not that horror film. If you like a medi-ocre scare, excellent make-up with the gore aspect, and a good psychological twist in the end you will love this movie.

I wish I could say more but I don't want to give anything away.

It was like Fight Club meets Friday the 13th with very cheesy gory parts. IMO, wasn't very original at all :boo:
Eh, I don't know. I've seen an awful lot of horror movies in my short time; in fact it's probably my favorite click when it comes to movie categories. I found the film to be quite exceptional. The make-up was awesome, when the gore and slashing took place you felt your skin curling up as well (at least I and some others did and you must admit that you don't get this in many horror movies nowadays), the whole movie depicted ideas that normally wouldn't take place in a horror movie of today. Most of the horror movies today are mere copycats of the 70's and 80's flicks. Someone bends in front of a mirror, now we all know that when this person bends upright again there will be an axe-wielding maniac behind them ready for the kill. This is far too predictable, this movie (in my eyes) was everything but predictable. I believe it brought about a 'right' level of horror, a unique level per se, so that it wouldn't frighten you as much as you thought of what you might do in that situation. Better yet, the movie made you feel the others pain through great detail. Look again at each scene, each scene depicts everything in great detail. The bathroom light not flickering on until a few seconds after the flick of the switch, the dolls in the room are just some minute examples of this.

I think the director did an awesome job depicting the surrounding environment to be realistic as well as the characters. I was shocked that the director showed the killers face so soon. This is also unlike many horror films; in order to be thrilled you must have a killer or monster that you cannot identify with. If you see the killers face you will be able to sympathize with that killer to an extent. In not being able to see this face you are not able to relate in most ways, it is the unknown of this killer that you seek but which also frightens you because you don't know.

I didn't like the ending at first but upon thinking over and over about it I have come to almost love it. You are basically seeing the movie through the French gals eyes and it is because of this that one becomes confused at the end of the movie. Here she has a split personality of sorts so you see things on both perspectives of her being because in her mind she is two persons and yet she doesn't even realize she is two persons. You not only see things from her perspective but also things from her (the killers) perspective, very unique and original I thought.

To follow up on your point, I have not yet seen Fight Club so I won't comment on that. However, I have seen Friday the 13th. Friday the 13th, the original, was more of a mystery slasher (whodunit?). I didn't really see any mystery in this movie; even in the end it was pretty straight forward (but one had to think about it psychologically for a bit). In High Tension it was basically a guy out for the kill, no reason really, you didn't know why (no mystery). It is this reason that the ending is keen throughout the film, you don't know the killers intentions until the end when it is found that the killer is who you least expect it to be (but the movie is shaped in a way that it leads you to believe it's not a mystery until it smacks you right in the face at the end).

Anyways, as you can tell I love movies and critiquing them. I often don't like many of the newer horror films but I enjoyed this one.:yay:
