D-3 fires vegan teacher

By JOCELYN ALLISON - jallison@nwherald.com
FOX RIVER GROVE – A District 3 art teacher who school officials said turned his classroom into a forum on veganism and animal rights and then told students to keep it a secret has been fired.

School board members voted, 7-0, to dismiss Dave Warwak from his position as an art instructor at Fox River Grove Middle School on Monday night after a 90-minute closed session.

The board cited three reasons for Warwak’s dismissal, saying that he began teaching veganism and animal rights instead of art without telling school officials or parents, told students to keep it secret and then refused to answer school officials’ questions about what he was teaching.

“This isn’t about whether veganism is good or bad,” board vice president Steve Knar said in a statement released after the vote. “It’s about the right of the district to be informed about the instruction taking place in the classroom and its ability to control the curriculum.”

Oh looky, he has a degree in "Would you like fries with that?"

he said, raising his voice. “You say it’s my personal choice, it’s not a personal choice when you’re ruining my planet and you’re eating my friends.”
:jameo:

I'm not surprised. :killingme

It'd be nice if they fired some of these liberal hippie teachers from Chopticon! :lmao:

It has been my experience as both a student and a parent that a majority of teachers push their personal agendas on the students, especially in an election year.

Speaking as a vegan myself , this guy's a brick shy of a load.

If someone asks me about my being vegan I'll discuss it. I don't hide the fact that I am vegan. But this guys tactics are over the line.

I'm not about to ram a block of tofu down anyones throat and would not appreciate someone grilling me about why I don't eat steak either. Do unto others yadda yadda...

Which is a scary thought for America's future.

We are gonna end up with people like the "Don't tase me bro" and the dummy at CSU that wrote the "F&^* Bush" article teaching our kids.

I graduated in 2000. Though my 18th b-day was just shy from being able to vote that year, our civics teacher definitely made her opinions of each presidential candidate clear to the entire class. That woman was a flaming liberal! Really didn't affect me, other than the fact that we got to debate just about every day in that class. And the fact that I think all the debating got in the way of actually learning something about that subject that year.

i'm surprised he didn't at least TRY to make a case for himself by arguing that art is about "self-expression" and thats what he was doing...expressing his belief in veganism.

I've got nothing against vegans or vegitarians or anything, but its also totally not for me...and i'd not have appreciated if this guy was trying to force his beliefs on me while in his class. he woulda seen me eating some good 'ol med-rare steak in his classroom :lmao: (and honestly i'm not a huge steak guy lol...but yeah...)

That's nice to see

At least they aren't as hard up as a CCBOE teacher getting canned for having an affair with a student.

Now if we can get rid of the rest of the scalawags in the system that have pea-brains and are corrupt, maybe we can start some real teaching.
