I just installed Firefox on my NMCI S&T seat after getting fed up with pages timing out, or connections refused, etc. in Internet Explorer.

This piece of software is just bookin' along!!! Way faster than IE has ever done on this machine. Outstanding!!!

I've been using it on my home computer for a couple weeks now. All I gotta say is :yay: :yay:

I thought it was illegal to install outside software on NMCI seats.
Not if you have an S&T seat...
it's set up specifically so that power users can install software.

I have an S & T seat. I also have read the agreement with taking on my S & T seat regarding loading software not FAM Approved...You got a DADMS number for Firefox...
That wasn't my understanding of it. Because as a developer seat, you're supposed to have the ability to install software that you've developed, which doesn't get "FAM" approved...
It's been awhile since I got it though...

Does this mean I have to uninstall it? :bawl:

I've been using Firefox at home this week, and I like it a lot. From a Web programming view, it seems to be identical to Netscape in its handling of DHTML/DOM issues, which saves me work in not having to code for another browser.

I also like that Firefox has none of IE's security problems. IE and the associated technologies like ActiveX are hooked deep into Windows, like honeysuckle choking the life out of a tree.

Sleuth, do you know what kind of arms were twisted in order to get NMCI to agree that programmers needed S & T seats in order to do their jobs? You are testing and loading programs that are in support of a pre-approved application. Do you realize the size of the security breach if every Tom, Dick and Harry with a S & T seat loaded whatever the heck they felt like loading? That defeats the entire purpose of NMCI. You really don't see the consequences of loading unapproved software...
I will uninstall it until I get verification that it's ok.

I understand the purpose of NMCI. But I also understand the purpose of S&T was to allow development and installation of software that has not necessarily been approved. The reason I was given an S&T seat was to develop software that hadn't been written yet for our group. It never went through an approval process.

You could always wait for their "middle of the night" security sweeps. :bubble:
Well... here I am... right back on slow... cruddy... cumbersome IE.
Firefox is uninstalled.

This sucks. I'm gonna find out some more about this issue, because the way the help desk explained it to me... installing software not on the list was ok if you had an S&T seat. :ohwell:

I'm not holding out that much hope, but I think Firefox has the potential to become a true competitor to IE.

And here I sit with TWO laptops on my desk, an NMCI (e-mail checker) and a legacy (for everything else).. Have Visual Studio and a few other programs on here that i couldn't get on my NMCI machine.. Money well spent!!
