Home appraisals

Hey all, I'm looking for a recommendation for an honest, accurate, home appraiser. I'm interested in having two homes looked at in the next few weeks. Not a "market analysis" but actual appraisals with detailed reports.

Any suggestions?

I was pleased with this gentleman's work:

Thomas E. Shipley & Associates, Inc.

Real Estate Appraisal - home appraisal - appraiser - real estate appraiser - residential appraisals - Dunkirk, MD - Thomas E. Shipley & Associates, Inc.

Although, I question the value of spending a money on an appraisal when you can do the same thing yourself by using what's for sale in the MLS, what has sold very recently in the tax records, how much similar foreclosures are selling for, and what the tax assessment is for the property. Unless it's a unique house, it's easy to get close to what you're going to be told by an appraiser for $350 or so. And people aren't paying appraised values anyway these days.

Thank you, for both the contact and the input. I am entirely unfamiliar with the process and opted to lean on a professional. While I agree houses aren't selling for appraised value, having an "official" appraisal is a big help and at least give me a starting point.
