Homegrown terrorists

Which leads me to concur with WMAL's morning DJ's assessment, which I was muttering under my breath until they just said it out loud - these guys are small potatoes. They're nobody. They're not really connected to al-Qaeda, they had no serious "plan" and had no explosives. They're a bunch of big-mouth nitwits that anyone with a pair of binoculars and a tape recorder could have brought down. They were pretty vocal about everything and made very little effort to diguise their intents, ideas and plans. The real al-Qaeda would be too embarassed by them.

*REALLY* disappoints me that this is being touted as some kind of breakthrough. As one of the DJ's commented, these guys are the high school JV team to al-Qaeda's major league.

That is the thought I have.........there will be a news conference at 10, I will have to stream CNN here at work. I still think they should be punished to the max of the law, we need to make an example out of these losers to all the other wacko wanna-be's out there.

McVeigh was a nobody too, that is until he did something. I haven't heard it being touted as something big, but it's nice to see that we aren't just looking for foreign terrorists.

Exactly. That's why I get so bent about liberals running around going, "They didn't do anything! Americans held without being charged :jameo: "

What is so terrible about crime prevention?

Yeah, but McVeigh actually HAD a truck full of ammonium nitrate. And he set it off. These guys didn't have anything.

And they were stupid. Neighbors heard their mutterings about Allah. They posted security guards VISIBLY outside their shelter - a warehouse where they all LIVED. They offered karate classes to neighborhood kids. Terrorist cell, my azz - they were idiot wannabes.

I mean, I *hear* about us busting up REAL threats - supposedly, shortly after 9/11. we intercepted a plot to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge during rush hour - and it was credible - and foiled. I've heard we stop threats like these several times a week, but they don't get coverage because - well, who wants to know about it? And a lot of them are overseas, so no one gives a crap.

So then should they have been left to their own? From what I have heard so far is that this "cell" was attempting to acquire the ammonium nitrate and thought that they were communicating with an al-Qaeda operative (really an undercover agent) to work out the plan.

The fact that they have been busted should be news. Moreso then some of the crap that is the news nowadays.

I understand what you're saying - I just think from the other news sources I've read on these guys, they were far too inept to ever pull it off. This was like watching an episode of "Cops".

They are probably going to get the services of the ACLU and walk..

We used illegal racial and ethnic profiling to investigate them, if they were white Catholics nobody would have "infiltrated" their gang, their rights were violated, now let them go, and give them their fuses and detonaters back..

As proven in the news everyday.. you don't have to be very "ept" to kill someone, or a lot of someones..

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- A federal indictment against seven men revealed Friday details of what the government said was a plan to "kill all the devils we can" by blowing up Chicago's Sears Tower.

The "jihad" was intended to be "as good or greater than 9/11," beginning with destruction of the 110-story tower and FBI buildings, according to court documents obtained Friday by CNN. :jameo:

They might have been too stupid to bring down the Sears Tower, but they could certainly have set off a bomb and killed a few people, anyway.

I hear what you're saying about why all the press coverage for these clowns. I can only think :

A. Slow news day
B: It's more exciting than global warming
C: The feds want to make it look like their security programs are working

Probably all of the above.

My feeling too. Admittedly, the WMAL morning DJ's have a way of influencing my opinion - plus, they sometimes have access to news bits I can't find in the press. Their opinion was these were a bunch of doofuses almost too stupid to live. They might as well have worn big name tags that said "Terrorist" right on them, because they showed none of the discretion or skill to pull anything off.

I realize there are those who think that morons can do this - and some of them can - e.g. the DC Sniper is a nitwit who was able to terrorize with a gun. But buying and moving explosive material has always been a little tough to do without someone noticing, and it got a LOT tighter after Oklahoma City. If you really want to kill a lot of people, don't be surprised if you pop up on a LOT of people's radar. And you're sure not going to get anything done with a "Terrorists R Us" sign outside the warehouse where you live.

From their ineptitude, they sound like the mice trying to bell the cat.

And you're right about a couple other things - you may have noticed that the missile test is making news, but until today, missile defense has been weak - and the Russians have said previously, a large assault of multiple missiles would easily defeat it. But hey, the test went great, didn't it?

Box cutters and empty brief cases. That is all it took for 4 jet airliners to be hijacked on 9/11. Well, throw in the attitude that has been shoved down all of our throats about never really defend yourself, just call the cops and wait for them to show up. Do we have to wait until some nutcases actually kill people? They have been nipped at the bud, good work by the cops on that one.
