I was told by one of the nice cashiers at Nicks to add some whipped vodka to hot chocolate. I haven't tested this out yet but how could it possibly be bad? Hmmmm, sure is cold out today. Maybe I'll go try some spiked hot chocolate! :killingme

I LOVE vodka. I really, really do. But hot vodka does not sound appealing :barf:

maybe some of that alcoholic whipped cream on top would be better.

Don't worry you won't even know that the vodka's there, until you try to figure out why you're looking at the bottom of the table from the floor.

I've gone back and forth as to whether the homemade marshmallows are worth the effort. Is there enough of a taste difference to justify to cost and time?

I think they are much better homemade. You can also omit the vanilla and add a little bit of peppermint extract if you like. Garnish w/ a candy cane. Sooo yummy

What I'm really looking for is a way to duplicate some hot chocolate we had years ago in Georgia. It was very thick,to the point it left a mustache after drinking it. Almost tasted like melted chocolate more than that watery taste from a mix,and when I asked what was in it,there was indeed melted chocolate and heavy cream.

This recipe is really rich and thick but I have also switched out the half & half for cream when I didnt have it on hand and it was even better.

Only one way to find out. I hadn't really given it too much thought but I can see what you mean. Hmmm, maybe some Baily's Irish Cream would be better? Never heard of alcoholic whipped cream, sounds good too!

DONUT HOT CHOCOLATE
Ingredients:
1 Donut, preferably cakey chocolate glazed
2 Cups of whole milk
4 packs of your favorite hot chocolate mix.
A pinch of salt
Directions:
Pour the milk in a blender and add the donut. Blend until smooth. The original recipe says this could take over a minute, so be patient. Transfer into a saucepan, add the salt and whisk over medium heat for three to four minutes until hot. Pour into four cups and top with a heaping mountain of mini marshmallows.

Back when I was in the navy, I got a chance to go to Paris a couple of times. There's this place called Angelina's not far from the American Embassy that is world renowned for the beautiful models who frequent the place and their hot chocolate. It's amazing, except amazing doesn't come close to describing it. It's like the best warm pudding in a cup with a small cup of homemade whipped cream on the side. It's like heaven, seriously. It's one of the few things everyone should taste once in their lifetime. It was difficult to keep from going there every day for the month I was there. (and I did gain 5 lbs in that month)

Almost Bourdain: Paris Angelina's Chocolat L'Africain (Hot Chocolate)

6 ounces chocolate , chopped (fine-quality semisweet or bittersweet)
1/4 cup water , room temperature
3 tablespoons hot water
3 cups hot milk , divided
sugar
whipped cream , if desired (it's seriously NOT optional - go big!)
Directions:
1. In a double boiler over low heat, combine chocolate and 1/4 cup water until melted, stir until smooth.
2. Remove top of double boiler pan from.
3. Whisk in 3 tablespoons hot water.
4. Pour into pitcher or divide among individual 4 mugs.
5. Either stir 3/4 cup hot milk into each mug or serve milk in a separate pitcher.
6. Pass sugar and whipped cream in separate bowls; add to taste.

I've been making homemade marshmallows and I wonder if you'd share what temp you cook yours to?

This is what we had as a kid growing up, there was always a big tupperwear tub of this in the fridge during the winter. Yummm!!

Mom’s Hot Chocolate Mix

8 cups powdered dry milk (approximately 1.5 lbs)
2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup Coffee Mate (try a flavored version of your choice for an extra kick)
2, 8-oz boxes of instant chocolate pudding mix
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon of cinnamon (optional)

Mix all together, put in air tight container and store in refrigerator. Use as needed. Add 1/3 cup mixture to 1 cup of hot water.

**Tip—run the powdered milk through a food processor or blender to create a more fine powder, otherwise, it can be a little lumpy, and harder to dissolve.
