Homeowner's Inusrance

Has anyone ever filed a claim that wasn't for fire, catastrophe or an Act of God? (Like a tree falling on the house?).

I was just wondering if this stuff is good for ordinary things - like the furnace or water heater failing. Is this insurance really only good as a hedge against fire or meteorites?

Depends on your policy. Mine covers flooding do to hot water going bad, will cover food in refrig if lose of power. Deductiable is usually high and not worth claiming the damage. Call your agent. We use Erin Ross, State Farm.

Rule of thumb is that if you can cover the damage yourself, you might want to do that. Putting in a claim can cost you more in the long run.

EX: I know it's not the scenario you were looking for, but I did have a tree crush my shed. I filed a claim, got a check, everything was working the way it was supposed to. Then I got the renewal statement. They added a fee, can't remember exactly what they called it, but the fee was in place for the next 3 years as a result of the claim I filed and cost more than the check they gave me for the damaged shed.

If you have a local agent, talk to them and press them for details before filing a claim.

As far as a heater failing, you'd be better off taking out a service contract with an oil company.

Check your deductible.... because if it is something that is say $700 to repair or replace and your deductible is $500 it probably wouldnt be worth it to put through a claim...

but your H/O covers a ton of stuff a tree falling on the house, say you are painting and you drop a can of paint and it gets on your carpet and furniture that is covered, a power surge, fire, a storm coming through and blowing shingles off your house, all your personality property no matter where in the world it is...

If you have something that you are wondering if it is covered or not pm me I am an Insurance Agent :howdy:

Things like a furnace or water heater failing are normal house repairs, not an insurance issue. Those would be covered by a home warrenty, if you have one.

How about a broken pipe in the ceiling of a downstairs bathroom? We didn't file, & ended up having to tear down the ceiling & walls in the bathroom.

The plumbing went bad(on the washer) and I noticed the vinyl floor in the kitchen bubbling up (ripple effect)

We ended up having water between the walls which then seeped into the entire downstairs.

The insurance company paid for it all, no questions asked.

The premium did not go up.
