Rival gangs from different neighbourhoods clashed in these shocking scenes of mass violence following a dispute over the result classic Il Palio horse race.The race has taken place since the mid-1600s and sees jockeys charge through the streets bareback to represent different 'contrades' - districts - in the city and is an extremely proud tradition in the Tuscan city. But when there was a dispute over the result of the race, supporting crowds from four different districts met head-to-head in violent clashes in the street.
