House Breaking Help needed

bcp

In My Opinion
no not me.
but my Chauaha (taco bell dog for spelling purposes)

he is not quite getting this house breaking thing, I have had other dogs and never had a problem getting the to understand the proper usage of the great outdoors, but this dog is either mildly retarded or just plain stubborn.

Anyone have any experience or knowlege in the training of this type of dog? he just does not seem to respond the same as normal (read, real) dogs.

last night was the end of my patience with this creature.

I walked around the side of the bed to get to my dresser, In my bare feet I stepped in a poo dropping left by him.
So, I bounce on one foot into the bathroom to quickly get to the shower to remove the stuck on matter from my foot.
I open the shower door, and there to my suprise is where my daughter hid her hampsters to keep the cats away from them this time.
So, I bend over to pick up the hampsters (one foot still in the air) and the cage falls apart, now I have cage parts all over the shower floor, hampster bedding on the shower floor, two hampsters running around the shower floor, and poo on my foot.
so, with my poo foot in the air I have to get the little hampster ball, stick the hampsters in it and then clean the shower out before I can attend to the poo foot that I have been graced with.
Now remember, this whole time I have poo smashed into my carpet that I still have not cleaned up. ( I do have professional carpet cleaning equipment sitting in the van in my driveway, so no real problem there)

at any rate, as one can imagine, this can not continue to happen.

so, anyone have any ideas on the breaking this dog of his nasty habits?

Oh, this is a serious question, the above story is for real, and Im about ready to send the little bastard back to where he came from.

How old is the dog? Do you crate him at night? Generally, they learn not to go in their bed (i.e., crate) and when you get up in the am, you pick them up and place them directly outside before their feet are allowed to touch the floor inside. Once outside, you give a command such as, "go potty" or whatever other expression you choose and once they obey you praise like mad of course. Until they are trained, you've got to watch them like a hawk if they are loose in the house and be attentive to the "signs" they are about to "go." Pick them up quick and place them outside and give the command.

Nooo, you don't do that! Dog craps in the floor and you find it 20 minutes later and THEN punish him, the dog isn't gonna put 2+2 together and will have no idea what is going on.

:yeahthat: 20-30 mins after meal time and right after waking up from a nap, take 'em outside. Try to stick to the same schedule also.

I agree with sticking to a schedule, but you have to watch your dog to figure the schedule out, it's not the same for all of them. My puppy has to go immediately after eating. The second he steps away from his food bowl, he has to be taken out.

Hi- I have 6 Chihuahuas- they take a while to "grow up".....how old is he? That will tell alot- Depending on his age and your set up, does he have a defined area to go to the bathroom? I have puppy pads set up in an area and they will go there is they get "caught short". Unless you are really scheduled to get them outside to potty, these little guys take a bit longer to be truly housebroken to go to the door like the big dogs. Regular timing, 5 or 6 times a day will do the trick! And yes we have a pen/dog house they sleep in at night so that first thing in the morning and last thing at night they go out. Don't take it personally, he is not doing it to tick you off! And Chi's can be yelled at and correct them- if you slap or get physical with them then they become one of those "nasty liittle dogs" that no one likes and they get a reputation for-it can be an inconveinience, but time does take care of most things with good prctice! Hang in there- love the story/picture of you hobbling to the hamster dilema!

I read this and busted out laughing. :killingme

I guess it isn't as mean as walking over and kicking Paco for his "mess", him flying thru the air yelping "Mierda Del Oh Cogi' para arriba."

Try the crate. :yay:

Crate training my Chihuahua helped so much! They really should be supervised at all times, or crated if they can't be watched. Just like someone else stated the grass should be the first thing their paws touch after leaving the crate. And of course praise them everytime they go in the correct place.

It took my chi about 2 weeks to realize the door led to the potty area, now he goes there when he needs to go out. He also responds if you ask him "do you need to go potty" because we always tell him go potty as soon as he gets outside. He'll get hyper, and jump around if he does have to go, after you ask. Good Luck!
