House breaking help

I am fostering a dashund and we seem to be having some potty issues. She used to be put in the garage to do her buisness so when I take her outside she isn't doing her buisness. I have had her since Saturday and she has only peed outside 3 times. All times she did go outside I praised her but she is peeing inside minutes after I have taken her out. I understand that there is an adjustment period but I have never had a dog have no interest in going outside. Any suggestions?

Go outside with her (even though it is a PIA) and when she does her business, praise AND give her a treat. Take her outside on a regular basis, perhaps everytime she eats or drinks. Do this for a few days. Daschunds are very smart and she should catch on after a few days. Remember they are also small, so what goes in will come out within 30 minutes.

This is how I broke ours. We still have a few accidents but not many after 6 months.

When she's in the house, don't let her out of your sight. Unless your relaxing and she's laying right next to you, or you're doing something where you can watch her every move, keep her either crated or on a longish leash tied to your waist or belt buckle. That way she can't sneak off and do her business and if she start's to squat, you can quickly grab her and take her outside. I have been successful housetraining puppies this way. Is she an adult dog?

Keep us posted. If our first suggestions don't work, perhaps we can come with some other ideas.

She is an adult dog. I had thought about tieing her to me so I could keep an eye on her. I am getting a smaller crate for her since the one I have now is from my former dog who was much bigger. Thanks for your suggestions.

I don't know how big her dog is but my doxie's legs are so short, it's hard to tell if she is standing, sitting or squatting. The only way to tell a squatting apart from standing is the position of her tail....goes nearly horizontal for a poo and vertical for a pee.

Doxies are hard to house train.
Do as suggested and when outside with her, do not let her "play around". Keep walking in a small area and wait. You have more patience than she has in her small bladder. Using a smaller crate is a good idea!
Good luck! :howdy:

Just another tip....if she goes outside, don't bring her in right away. Sometimes dogs learn that right after they potty they have to go inside, so they will delay pottying....

Lets go Hokies!
My best tip is whenever you go outside make sure to always have treats on you to give her when she pees outside. We used to keep a bag of treats next to where we kept our dog's lease so we always had them on hand. Good luck.

:yeahthat: I have one too and she was 5 when I got her and was used to going in the house. YUK! It took about a month but I was really diligent in watching her and basically every 30 minutes I took her out. I think what helped her is that I have another dog so when she went ou they went out together and she finally got the idea. Good Luck! They are awesome dogs! :flowers:
