I didn't have to teach my cats how to be housebreak. Dogs are stupid.

Yeah, but dogs give you hugs and are excited to see you when you get home. Cats are only excited when you leave.

I have a weird cat. It likes to play poker and swim, and the dude looks like a lady.

I just kept taking my dog out every 2-hours.

I wonder if you went to the bathroom outside with him if it would help.

:lmao: That's why cats kick ass!

My cats are abnormally needy.

Girl Kitty has been out since 5:30 this morning and she hasn't come home yet.

Oops. This is the dog forum.

:yay:

I have never been a cat person but I must say the kitty I have now is very cool.

I felt bad because he accidently got left outside overnight. This morning he was scratching at the door meowing his head off.

Assuming the dog is a puppy:
*Try to walk him hourly and make him go potty in a particular area in the yard. That'll make him associate going potty with being outside generally and in that spot in particular. It's actually harder to get the dog to understand that he needs to let you know when he wants to go out.
*Expect a bowel movement 30-60 minutes after he eats, and he'll need to go out 10-15 minutes after drinking.
*As he gets older, he'll go less frequently, because his digestive system will mature and he'll have better control over his muscles.
*Be ready for accidents. The dog may go back to spots where he's had an accident, because he'll smell it. Stores like Petsmart and Petco sell a cleaner that breaks down the organic molecules that he can smell.
*Try to avoid punishing the dog for accidents. It doesn't tell him going potty in the house is bad, it just tells him going potty is bad.
*Petsmart stores usually have certified pet trainers on staff, so you can call and ask to talk to one if you need help. (They also have classes you can take him to at the store.) I'm not sure if Petco does, too; it wouldn't hurt to ask.

It's natural to want to please. Keep taking him out (I'm assuming gender) - Often. Have treats handy when he goes where you want him to go. Reward him right away.

Don't feel bad about disciplining him when he makes those inevitable mistakes, otherwise he'll learn that it's okay to do it.

Clean the areas that he messes very well! He'll keep going back there if you don't!

Good luck. I expect pictures! :huggy:

Crate traning is the best way to get them to "hold-it" until they are taken outside.

Dogs will not "void" where they have to sleep. Be sure to immediately take the pet outside when they are allowed out of the crate.

Also, if you are buying a crate get one that is sized to your dog when he is full grown. Then use that craet with the puppy but reduce the size to fit the puppy (I used from the crte paking). This will keep him from using a far corner to void.

This method has always worked for me...

:yeahthat: And they feel more "secure" when it's not a huge area. I felt bad at first, like I was confining my dog. He will still sometimes bark when he first goes in, because he wants to socialize. But when I have the gate open, he'll go in there to hide, nap, get cozy...

gotta agree with cletus on this one, the crate is the best way to go. Not only does it help with the bathroom issues, it helps with calming down dogs that get anxious when left alone. But you have to be consistant about anything you do, that is the real key.

AWW reading this stuff makes a girl proud!! You guys are very sweet for giving advice. Smurfie, your puppy won't be remotely ready for "housebreaking" himself until around 4 months old, but Smurf can certainly train *himself* to when the puppy will need to go out until he can housebreak..
Is your dad happy with your new little addition? He sure is CUTE  great big ole round head
