HOW BIG IS WAL-MART?

Here're mind-boggling statistics on Wal-Mart!

1. At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day.

2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!

3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.

5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer.

6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.

7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.

8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy (including Winn-Dixie).

9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.

10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago.

11. This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at a Wal-Mart store.

(Earth's population was approximately 6.5 billion shortly after noon today).

12. 90% of Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.

Kinda makes one wish we'd paid more attention in business class, if we went
to business class.

I'm waiting for Forestal to chime in any moment to show us how evil WalMart is.

Only as evil as any other merchant selling the wares of China, it is a big reason why I only go there when I absolutlry have to, I don't like buying the bullets that will eventually kill my friends.

Does anyone know when the Walmart in Dunkirk is going to open? Is it a supercenter?

Everything is made in China, whether you go to Wal-Mart or Target or the Mall. It's doing more for our economy that thier's.

I don't go to Wal-Mart but it has nothing to do with anything "evil" or corrupt about it. I just haven't been to one in years that isn't so crammed with junk that you can hardly move - so understaffed at the registers that it takes forever to get out - so weirdly constructed that you can't find a damned thing anywhere - so disorganized in the clothing department that I can never find anything my sisze - and so often staffed by dimwits who act as though waiting on customers is a nuisance and an avoidable inconvenience.

Just to able to go into a store, find what I want without having to squeeze past an aisle obstruction and get out in a reasonable amount of time is worth ANY additional markup.

I agree. I find it hard to concentrate in a Wal-Mart, because it's so disorganized and noisy. Plus, the aisles are so narrow that two carts cannot pass each other. I'm not a browser-type shopper except in bookstores or music stores - usually I want to get my stuff and get the hell out. I find Target more user-friendly.

I just find that Wal-Mart brings out the bottom of the gene pool.

This is a very common Walmart strategy. They come in and build a nice small store. As time goes on, they clutter it up more and more, then beg to be wllowed to build a "super" walmart. They justify it by showing just how crowded the tiny little walmart is.

My in-laws town fell for it. St. Mary's fell for it. They will now have huge stores with crappy service selling goods made in foreign sweat shops. Calvert didn't fall for it. For once, they did the right thing.

The one in Calvert used to p!ss me off because if you want to go north, you gotta make a U turn at the light. It's not Wal-Mart's fault of course, but I just got annoyed. I lived in CRE then, and I found crossing the bridge into St Mary's just easier once Target got built.

I don't like it any more than you do, but they are making money legally and serving the demands of their customers. You know it's a two-fold problem with relying on foreign goods (like China): 1) There is a demand for them because they are cheap, meaning Americans aren't willing to change their purchasing habits and 2) It costs too much to buy American-made goods.

Actually most Super Centers that I have been in have been very spacious, have nice wide isles and are very clean.

The California MD Walmart is about the trashiest and smallest that I have ever been in.

And finally I have seen many places that had no Walmart and a Super Center or two have been built fairly close together and both were crowded.

I was even in a Super Center in the south that had hardwood floors.
