How much $ to up-grade electric service

I am thinking about up-grading electric to heavier. We presently have 110 and want to have enough service to run a garage and tools out there.
Anyone know about how much it would cost to get the service from SMECO and how much an electrician would get to install the panel box?
I know very little about what's involved here, so I hope I am asking the right questions.
Any recommendations on someone to do it in Calvert?

Sounds like what you really need to do is call a few different electricians and tell them specifically what you need, and have them provide a quote.

Was very reasonable and came out within two days, he took care of calling SMECO to cut off electric while they did the work. Was completed in just about 3 hours.

You have a 120/240 volt service. See GW's post below for the best advice.

I'm in the "wonder if I could afford to " stage of thinking about it. I was hoping a reader might be able to answer my question and tell me a ball park area, hundreds, thousands of $ just for the service hookup and the box. I didn't want to be bothered, yet, with making appointments for people to come out and all that.
Thanks for the suggesion, though. I already knew I would have to do that to get an accurate estimate.

It doesn't hurt to ask for a quote; My dads house was changed about 10 yrs ago and it was about 600.....

We upgraded to a 200 amp panel, tore out the old one and the hot wired circuits, installed two outlets in garage for around $1000.
Hayden's Electric. Have also used J.C. Electric, both these guys are good and honest.
