How much was James O'Keefe being paid at Project Veritas

When this recent kerfuffle about James O'Keefe and Project Veritas kicked off, there were some allegations about financial impropriety. Made me curious as to how much he was being paid by Project Veritas. PV is a non-profit organization, so finding this information is easy. Non-profits are required to file tax returns and the public can examine those Form 990's. I found all of the 990s dating back to the founding of PV. Here's what I discovered.

The most recent data available is for 2021. His compensation as "Chairman" was:

$396,409 + $8,625 in what they call "other compensation."

The following site reports that "Other compensation" must include things like:

  • Deferred compensation
  • Employer contributions into a defined contribution retirement plan
  • Increases in the actuarial value of defined benefit plan amounts
  • Employer paid health benefits
  • Employee health benefits paid with pre-tax dollars
  • Nonqualified deferred compensation

I also compiled the following chart of compensation dating back to 2011 when PV was founded:

I imagine fans will say he was not paid enough, while detractors will say he was paid far too much.

If you found this interesting, please bring me a dozen eggs.

Now do Goodwill and the American Cancer Society...

I don't have a problem with someone like O'Keefe making bank through a non-profit because they don't play on your guilt or sense of civic duty. It's a political org and they make no bones about it. No different than donating to a political campaign.

But when a charity or health org is paying their people big money it rubs me the wrong way because I feel like they're being misleading.

Because when you donate to a charity, you don’t want your money lining the pockets of someone who’s living better than anyone at all. It’s impossible to support say, a homeless shelter where 90 cents out of every buck goes to someone living high on your meager largesse.

I always look for the total overhead cost for charities.

Politics. Feh. It’s all just money down the drain.

If I may ...
For your consideration ...

And yet, those that complain about non-profits, (especially those that don't donate), paying out large sums to the head leaders, will argue for the justification of government employees being paid large amounts and lavish benefits and pensions to, of course, attract the best and the brightest, while at the same time be just dandy being forced at the point of a gun to have their wages and property stolen/taxed to pay for these leeches.

Will wonders ever cease?
