How often do you get a new computer?

My laptop is a little over 5yo and I'm about ready for a new one.
Have used this Dell for the last 15,16 years with no issues but it is starting to act up...Was going to replace a couple years ago but didn't. Now looking to replace with a laptop even tho I would prefer a desktop. Hate trying to navigate on a laptop keyboard so I will probably get a wireless keyboard and mouse, plus a big monitor.

My office desktop is a pretty nice unit. Corsair PC with intel 8th Gen Core i7 CPU and Windows 10. Purchased to run Solidworks and Rhino 3D. I'm using it for National Instruments LabVIEW. Still has many years on it, but Microsoft it will not support the Windows 11 upgrade.

When technology goes past its ability to keep up. As in, too little memory, too slow a processor and so on.

THIS laptop, I got about five years ago - BUT - I made sure

1. I got every deal and discount imaginable on it
2. I massively upgraded the memory and got the fastest I knew how to install
3. I replaced the drive it came with for something superfast.

I've been happy with it for years now.

Same thing with my old workstation in my office. Replaced it when it just couldn't keep up.

My last one gave out after 10 years. But then I use it for photo editing so it was due for an upgrade anyway.

Damn, after looking up those three pieces of software, my pedal and little Photoshop feels like it should have training wheels.

It might be cut and dry for things like ultra-portable laptops and such but it's a bit more philosophical of a question for desktops.

On the one hand, I still have the same computer I had 20 years ago. On the other hand, only the case and one PCI card are original. Everything else has been upgraded peace-meal over the years.

if you keep your boss off the midget porn sites, you don't need to upgrade, surf the web on something else, like your laptop

I'm now using WinAreo Tweeker to BLOCK All Windows updates ... and I killed all of teh Win Defender nonsense as well

Honestly Windows 2000 and Office 2000 are fine for 99% of routine office work even lighter 98SE and Office 97

What I have found over the last 6 months is that websites, mainly financial websites, are forcing me to upgrade. My current iMac I’ve had for more than 6 years running Mojave, released in 2018. The computer does every I need with video and photo editing, but when it comes to the web, no bueno. So this past weekend I upgraded to Big Sur, released in 2020. This meant losing some apps that I really liked that were not supported by the new OS AND the websites still don’t work! I despise upgrades! Very seldom do they offer anything of value - only more bloat that slows your computer down. I guess I will try to upgrade to Monterey in the coming weeks to see if it solves the website issues, but as far as my computing power goes, I’m still happy. I also run WinXP, Win7, and Win10 on my iMac. I don’t care for Win10 and the forced updates. I will check out @GURPS software to prevent the updates.

Oh yeah, I’ve got a “dump” computer that I use as my main computer at the store running Win7. A friend found this computer at the Ridge dump 5-6 years ago. Got it working and gave it to me - works great! I don’t need a lot of power at the store - we have a server to host the big part of our POS. The server is only about 3 years old, replacing our prev IBM server that was almost 20 years old.

So yeah, back to the original question- I replace computers after many years, and sometimes I replace them with dump computers.

So why not keep what you had, and use a different computer for Internet access ?
