How soon is to soon to get another dog after one passes??? We had our little buddy for 3 years and he was taken from us suddenly. We miss him so much and the quietness of the house is driving us crazy. We just don't want to get another for the wrong reasons?? whats an appropriate length of time to greive???

If you are ready for a new buddy, your head & heart will tell you. Sometimes you just need to fill the void in your heart rather quickly, it does not tarnish your last pets memory. Sorry for your loss! Best of luck with looking for your new family member! :yahoo:

There is nothing that hurts worse than for a pet or a loved one to be taken suddenly. Sorry for your loss. :huggy: Each person grieves their own way and has their own time frame... and just like PrepH4U said... your heart will tell you when its time. There is nothing wrong with getting another pet not too long after and there is also nothing wrong with waiting.

Good luck

When your ready

As everyone is saying....You will know...doing rescue I have found people get one when they know they may loose a pet so that there is no void....others wait years. Follow your hearts and look for a special family addition when you are ready. somd.com is a great place to look and if you don't see anything check out the local shelters or Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder when it is time to make a move.

Sorry for your loss it is never easy, but seems harder when you don't have time to mentally prepare. :huggy:

sorry for your loss. it's really painful to lose a fur friend. the longest I ever lasted without a pet was about two weeks. Just take your time in making your selection. You will know when it's right. good luck in your search.

We had to put our dog down the day after Thanksgiving. To me she was a once-in-a-lifetime dog and can never be replaced. Nonetheless, we adopted another dog within two weeks because it seemed so weird not having a dog. She was such a big part of our life - the house was so empty. We found a dog on Petfinder that appeared close to her in appearance and color and was also a beagle mix. She's been with us for going on four months and is doing pretty well considering she was a kill shelter rescue, was recovering from heart worm, and apparently not well house trained. We are fond of her and committed to giving her a good forever home. I'm sure you can hear the "but" coming. I wish we hadn't gotten a dog so quickly although I'm becoming more OK with it everyday.

To me, getting a dog that resembles the once in a lifetime dog is setting the new one up for failure. They will never measure up to the one you lost. Sorry for your loss. Hope you will come to love the new one as much.

Good reply.
I believe this is a very true statement.

And sorry for your loss.

:yeahthat: When my rottie died I went to the totally different extreme. Old English sheepdog. Fluffy and not intimidating by looks alone.
Dowhat I know what you mean, my bloodhound/redbone mix is 14 now and is really starting to show his age :bawl:

Good Post!!!!
I thought the same thing when I read it!!! :buddies:
I never understood the people that pay 25,000 dollars to get a remake of the pet they lost. The pet may look exactly the same but the behaviour aspect is up in the air.

maybe go to the shelter or to a pet rescue adoption event and visit with some other dogs and see if you have a connection with any, you could always volunteer with a rescue and get to know some of the dogs....take your time ,your next buddy is out there

You'll know when the time is right. We lost our boy in October but it wasn't sudden and we were on a roller coaster ride with him for almost a year. We probably would have gotten a puppy sooner but we needed to recharge and get back to a little more normal before we got the next one. I agree you can never replace the one you lost but a new dog can fill an empty space in your heart. We were "dogless" for 5 months and it was miserable every day. We are partial to brindle boxers and Bode is our 4th. They all have different personalites and we didn't expect them to be the same.

Follow your heart and you will know when it's the right time and the right dog. Good luck in your search.

The fact that she resembeled our dog was what caught our eye on petfinder - it wasn't the primary reason we adopted her. We had the resources to have a dog, her story was very touching and compelling and we wanted to give her a good home after her rough start in life and I think we've done that. She is a very happy dancing and smiley dog which is in stark contrast to the fearful, shy animal of four months ago. She still has issues but she's come a long way so I wouldn't say I view her as a failure.

Adopt me please !
After my last one died (suddently also), I went to the shelter the next week to get another dog. I wanted to save a life - and I did. My current dog is a black male and was on death row longer than most dogs last there - the staff really liked him and were trying to help him stay alive until someone came along, but he was going down that week finally. I'm glad I was able to save him.

I bet you would find a great dog at the shelter or one of the adoption events? You don't have to wait, you can do it now.
