According to a study published Tuesday in the journal Trauma Surgery and Acute Care Open, firearm deaths claimed 1.44 million years of potential life in 2017, edging out motor vehicle crashes (1.37 million years). In 2018, the trend persisted.

These figures are based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States from 2009 through 2018, the most recent year for which data was available.

Researchers calculated years of potential life wasted by subtracting the age of death from the standard age of 80, which represents the average US life expectancy of 78.7 years, and then adding the discrepancies.

This is one of the few places an abortion comparison is completely appropriate.

Oh pshaw! That's just a potential drop in the bucket compared to the potential asteroid derechos we'll have when the sun implodes.

Potentially, I mean.
