How To Disable GM's Manual Skip Shift For Seven Bucks

The guys at CadillacFAQ hacked together a replacement quick-disconnect plug which replaces a part of the same with one loaded up with a resistor as jumper to fake the system into thinking the servo is still in the circuit. All it takes is a replacement plug bought from the local parts store (here a "Conduct Tite" male end connector part number 85307 - $2.99) the pins to load into that connector ( "Conduct Tite" inserts, part number 85317 - $2.99), a 2.2K ohm 0.5 watt resistor from Radio Shack which costs about $1, some solder, electrical tape and time. The hacksters here soldered both ends of the resistor into the pin inserts after crimping them on, then bent the resistor for insertion into the plug housing.

Here they just leave it bare and insert it into the connector leading to the transmission, leaving the servo unpowered, then they tape it all together with duct tape and call it good. We'd probably get a vacuum cap and stick it over the end, then seal it further with heat shrink wrap, but that's just us. In any case, for seven bucks you no longer have the annoyance of your transmission wrestling some amount of control from you. Now perhaps Krewson will grant the Pontiac G8 GXP that final star in the transmission department. [CadillacFAQ]

Yep, car forums are great places for info like this. On some vehicles, there's ways to shut off the "auto-lock", or make it so that all four doors unlock on the first press of the remote, not just the drivers.

It's called "Computer Aided Gear Selection" or CAGS — and it's a system which works by using a solenoid in the transmission to force the driver to shift from first to fourth when you're driving in a leisurely fashion in 1989-and-on GM vehicles using certain 6-speed transmissions. It's purpose is to improve gas mileage and avoid the "gas-guzzler" new car tax.

I find that absolutely diabolical. :tap:

Yep, LR forums saved me THOUSANDS of dollars in repair work..

One of the very first things I did on my GM was to turn off the auto-lock. I'd step out of the truck and 15 seconds later all the doors would lock. Bummer when your keys are still inside.....

thats like saying your first bike was a Vespa, so you never bought another bike.

No, that would be like saying I never bought another vehicle manufactured by the Piaggio Group
I could by other scooters or bikes made by a different corporation.

I have owned many cars since the Vega, but none manufactured by GM

Thanks,

It was in a supplement to the owner's manual for my 2000 GMC Sierra. This may or may not work on newer models.

Your vehicle left the factory programmed to have the automatic lock feature lock all the doors when the vehicle speed is greater than 15 mph for 2 seconds, and then unlock all the doors once the key is removed from the ignition. The following instructions detail how to program your door locks:

1. Beginning with your ignition OFF, pull back on the turn/multifunction lever all the way toward you and hold it while you perform the next step.

2. Turn your key to ON and OFF twice. Then with the key in OFF, release the turn/multifunction lever. Once you do this, you will hear the lock switch lock and unlock.

3. You are now ready to program the automatic door locks. Select one of the following four programming options and follow the instructions. You will have 10 seconds to begin programming. If you exceed the 10 second limit, the locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate you have left the program mode. If this occurs, repeat the procedure beginning with step 1. Yo can exit the program mode at any time by turning the ignition to ON (the locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate you are leaving the program mode). If the lock/unlock switches are not pressed while in the programming mode, the auto lock/unlock setting will not be modified.

The following is a list of the available programming options:

All doors lock/Only driver's side door unlocks: Press the lock side of the power lock switch on the door panel once and then the unlock side once.

All doors lock/All doors unlock: Press the lock side of the power lock switch on the door panel once, then the unlock side twice (this is the factory setting).

All doors lock/None of the doors unlock: Press the lock side of the power lock switch on the door panel once, and then the unlock three times.

No doors lock/None of the doors unlock: Press the lock side of the power lock switch on the door panel twice. This turns off the automatic lock feature.

Oh, and to turn off the automatic headlights, press the "Dome Override" button 4 times. Press 4 times again to turn the headlights back on. Useful when approaching a guard gate.....

And to turn off the "change your oil" warning light, turn on teh key, press the accelerator 5 times. If it ties into the computer thru some sensor, it can be used as a discrete switch to toggle something...

Ok, the above was to stop the locks from locking when you start moving. THIS should be the lockout prevention:

To protect you from locking your key in the vehicle, this feature stops the power door locks from locking when the keys are still in the ignition and a door is open. If the power lock switch is pressed when a door is open and the key is in the ignition, all of the doors will lock, and then the driver's door will unlock.
