How to Dispose of Rx Drugs Safely

PSA-
With the rise in prescription drug abuse, 3 federal agencies issued guidelines for disposing of medications without harming the environment.

*Remove unused, unneeded or expired prescription drugs from their original containers.

*Mix prescription drugs with an undesirable substance, like used coffee grounds or cat litter, and put them in impermeable, nondescript containers, such as empty cans or sealable bags.

*Throw containers in the trash.

*Don't flush prescription drugs down the toilet unless the accompanying patient information says specifically it is safe to do so.

*Return drugs to pharmaceutical take-back sites that allow consumers to return unused drugs for safe disposal.

I don't think coffee grounds or used cat litter would work for someone wanting oxycontin.. And if they didn't want if for themselves they'd just brush it off and sell it to their friends.. garbage men have to supplement their income somehow!

Sewage goes into treatment plants, then rivers. Drugs pass through, and do wierd things to fish. They can also build up in fish, then be eaten by humans.

It isn't a factor for most drugs, but there are some that actually do matter.
